Paypal Rant: Does it annoy you that they charge for everything they possibly can?

I'm going to start off by saying that this error was my fault, but I find the fee they charged me grossly unjustified. I'll be writing an e-mail to them about this but wanted to share my story with you all as well.

I don't buy/sell/trade online much, except for the big retailers whom I wouldn't need to use PP with anyways (Amazon, Staples, Office Depot). I finally got around to setting up PayPal a month or so ago, and created a new chequing account solely for use with it. Having received my first PayPal payment, I went to withdraw the money into that chequing account - "This will take 5-7 days to process." Okay, that's cool. I'm in no rush.

10+ days pass, and I finally get an e-mail from PayPal.

Wow, helpful! But that much was my fault, as I had entered an incorrect branch transit number for PayPal to use. I expected some fee to be taken off, so with a tiny bit of good-natured dread I logged in to PayPal to see what they took off, and to re-do the transfer.

Thirty dollars.
Thirty dollars!
THIRTY FREAKING DOLLARS.

I can understand $0.50, $1.50 or even $5.00. But $30.00?! I don't care if all fees are disclosed and I just missed reading about it, where the hell do they get off charging THAT MUCH for an error? That's insane. I'll write to them politely about it, I'll stomach it if I have to, but that still is BS. It's like just because they have literal access to your money, they take whatever they want just because they can. Holy crap.

Brutal.
In times of this economy, many companies will do anything to fleece you.

NSF?

non sufficient funds. if you make a transaction and can't cover it, it gets bounced back and they tack it on as a service fee. Most banks, its about $25. credit unions is much lower i think.

No, not at all. In fact I enjoy paying people more money. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

What kind of question is that?
If you don't like it, don't use it.

**EDIT**

that is what i get for not reading the post before posting

It sounds like sully was transferring money from Paypal to his checking account, not taking money out of his checking to go into paypal. So it's not like Paypal lost anything here, they just didn't try to send it to the right bank. NSF doesn't even apply here, they had his money and are charging him for failing to tell them the right place to send it. The amount of money they charged is normal for "fees" but it's asinine to be charging a fee just for having a typo in a routing number. Does anyone think Paypal lost anything besides a few CPU cycles when their computers contacted the wrong bank and said "hey, here's some money for sully's account" and the bank responded "I don't know any sully"? Maybe a customer care agent who wasn't doing anything but surfing non-work-related web sites had to take 10 seconds to look at what happened and hit the button to generate the email to him.

Of course, this is why I won't use PayPal for anything. I don't care if I can't get something done without them, it's not important enough if they're the only way available.
