Paypal new TOS = they can fine you up to $2500 for "messages, content, and material". Update: Rescinded?

People thought Paypal was evil before... now they're censoring the internet?

This is why we NEED crypto. Money for the people, by the people.

Edit: Here's a great little take on the whole affair.

More like it's just one more reason not to ever use Paypal again especially with the number of better options available.

They completely suck donkey-balls.

There aren't that many great options. Virtually 100% require some kind of middleman that takes a cut from the process. There needs to be a digital equivalent of cash.

Paypal's customer-service is so terrible it's literally worthless.

I've been using Cash-App and/or Zelle without issue instead for quite some time now because Paypal tried to fvck me after 25+ years of business over a $22 fraudulent-charge. (Cash-App provides a free Visa debit-card too)

As for that video however I find it to be EXTREMELY short on any details of what exactly Paypal "censored" here and that woman comes across as a bit of a kook.

A "$2500 fine from Paypal" ROTFvcking L !?! :p

They gonna send around the Paypal-police to collect?

If you're stupid enough to trust Paypal to hold onto your money you get what you deserve when it gets snatched up by them. (and it will with the smallest excuse!)

Don't even act surprised. o_O

They already released a statement that this was in error (ironic), and they are not going to implement in their TOS.

https://www.yahoo.com/video/paypal-policy-permits-company-fine-143946902.html

That said, this version had to be at least something they were thinking about doing at one time, so for me that's a major red flag. Ambiguous language about possible $2500 "fines" is no bueno for me.

Depending on what comes of this once more legitimate sites report on it, and what Paypal does to ensure they won't ever consider doing this type of thing in the future, I'll decide on whether to keep my Paypal account or close it.

Simply put Paypal is not to be trusted. :confused_old:

Personally I'll never use them again after the way I was treated by their customer-service over a pittance compared to what I've spent/collected with them over literal decades.

I'm amazed that she is perfectly fine with having overpaid by $1000 and having no recourse. Bartering/exchanging goods and services is the original currency of the people, by the people IMO, and I have never heard of it being hacked, has no conversion costs or burning up power in computations and enriching foreign crypto-mining operations.

Well more mainstream sites have reported on this story, and outside of Paypal's weekend statement that new policy change was released in "error", they have not released any new statements on how or why this proposed $2500 fee found it's way into their UAP.

https://fortune.com/2022/10/10/paypal-users-fine-misinformation-aup-error-confusion/
https://www.reuters.com/business/fi...ers-misinformation-bloomberg-news-2022-10-10/

"PayPal is not fining people for misinformation and this language was never intended to be inserted in our policy. We're sorry for the confusion this has caused," a spokesperson for the company said.

If this was the work of a (suspected) rogue employee, they should have stated so. At this point, I personally believe this was something they were considering doing, and ultimately decided not to do it at the last moment. However, someone(s) forgot to remove the language from what was released.

Hopefully what I believe happened doesn't amount to a $2500 misinformation fee against my Paypal account. ;)

Weird. Youtube accidentally demonetized a slew of channel operators on Saturday. Are these companies tipping their hand?
Now we know what they fantasize about. Or maybe what they have in store.

Read the CoinBeauroe piece about Circle and CBDC. They've apparently got them nearly ready to go. Friend told me that money in these accounts has expiration dates, so that you're not allowed to save money any more, under their new scheme.

JP is great, he really nails this stuff with great humour.

Closed my PP account as soon as I found out about this. The redaction was a joke, the fact that it was on the table was enough for me. They were making it very hard to do though, I had to trick them into it. The chat was useless, and the web interface would not let me do anything, so I called them. I said I switched banks and need to delete my accounts so I can add the new ones. Long story short they did something to my account to allow me to delete my accounts, and once I was able to do that, it let me delete the account outright.

I used PP mostly when I was running my game server, as I had a donation system where people can donate towards the server and the IPN system allowed me to give in-game prizes for donating. I also run a top site list which had a donate button on it. I don't run my game server anymore and I can live without the donations from the top site list so I just got rid of it and even put a little blurb on the site to inform users of why the account is deleted.

There's probably alternatives but I have not really looked into them. One issue may arrise when you run into a site that only accepts Paypal, but I think they will quickly realize that's a bad idea. It's a good idea to find a way to accept credit cards directly these days really. No need for a middle man, other than CC company.

Yeah that's scary shit right there, this is why we have to reject cashless society and Digital ID. They will both tie together.

Very early in the paypal days, they demanded access to my checking account after I had used them a specific number of times. I was only a buyer, and only used a single credit card, for the security VISA provides.

Uhh, that is a hard NO... and guess what, haven't missed or needed them for close to two decades now.

Wow, this is pretty scary. I just withdrew the small balance I had from my paypal account.

Also, for those wondering, there are digital equivalent of cash. USDC for instance.

That's a good video and it seems similar to what they did to my account before this even blew up. I almost wonder if they were starting to freeze accounts ahead of time for "misinformation" as I tend to go against the grain of the overall narrative. I tried to use Paypal for something maybe like 2-3 weeks ago and it would not let me, it just said "there is a problem with your account" with zero explanation. I didn't think much of it until I found out about what they were doing and tried to delete my account or unlink my bank account and it was giving me that error again. I had like $20 in there and was not able to take it out either, but it did let me refund it. Long story short I had to trick them into letting me delete my account, by telling them I was switching to a new bank and had to remove the links. I was able to delete the account after unlinking all the accounts.

As a side note, I'm famous, at 16:06 there's a screenshot of one of my tweets. :p

I don't like Paypal but they have worked for me. A guy tried to scam me on Paypal and I won. It's good for selling and buying backpacks from a carry group I'm in. The Paypal credit card is cool, 6 months interest free. I don't keep a balance in there ever. If I ever want to just send or receive cash from people I know, it's Zelle or Venmo. Paypal is just for some third party purchases and that credit card.
