I only accept payPal on the small auctions now, since their cut is too big on the high dollar items...

Yup, that's the way to do it. Don't like their service? You're not forced to use it.

on e-bay auctions, I usually just pad shipping costs to cover the percentage that PayPal takes out.

it's, like, 2.9% or something isn't it?

depending on the account type you have, they can be as low as 1.9% + .30 cents

i remember the good ol' days when paypal was free and you got $5 just for signing up

I paid the fees and I dont' like them but my real problem with paypal is their chargeback and seller protection policy. I send a package to a guy, it gets lots in the mail, I send a new one out for the difference minus the insurance amount. Guy is happy but does a chargeback on his CC, paypal takes the money from me and I have to spend a day on the phone to get the money back. Not to mention they charge me 10 bucks because some guy did a chargeback on his card.

Take this other scenario. Someone says goods aren't in the condition described. The item was brand new. Now, paypal says go ahead, send it back to the seller and we'll refund you as soon as we get a tracking #. So, guy throws a f*ckin weight in a box and sends it back with tracking # and paypal screws me out of 800 bucks.

Yes, both these scenarios have happened to me. Not to mention the ridiculous fees they charge and the only reason peopel go with them is because it's a standard. You can't not accept paypal so you have no other alternative.
