Has anyone encountered a PayPal error screen while trying to send some funds for a transaction?
I encountered this screen last week and unfortunately, I did not get a screen capture. The error page was encountered when I tried finalizing a transaction. A PayPal screen then popped up notifying me that the transaction could not be completed. It was repeated in multiple languages. At the bottom of the page, there was a RETRY link.
I clicked on the RETRY link two additional times. At both times, I encountered the same error screen. I decided to complete the transaction later. I went back to my PayPal account page. Lo' and behold, there were three transactions to the same seller for the same item.
I was pretty pissed. That meant PayPal had authority to withdraw 3x the amount from my bank account. What got me even more pissed was the fact that the error page mentioned that the transaction could not be completed. It then provided me a RETRY link to try it again.
I called up PayPal and complained about this. They told me that the best way to fix this is to get the seller to refund me the extra amount of money. I told them that it wasn't the seller's fault, and the extra transactions were done due to a misleading error page that they provided me.
I called up the seller and explained the extra transactions. She said that other users have experienced the same thing. The poor seller had tons of extra work to do just to fill out some forms and refund the extra transactions. When she finally sent the refund, PayPal put the amount on temporary hold. Well, that was understandable since the bank transfer did not occur, yet. However, I checked my account and the refund was recently released ... about two days after the bank transfer occurred.
Does anyone else think something fishy is going on?
The fact that PayPal has a misleading page that tricks users into retrying a transaction and actually withdrawing the extra funds and holding it for a few days smells like a scam. The seller told me that other users had as much as 5 extra transactions.
This sounds like Paypal is trying to trick some users into letting them "borrow" some additional funds for a few days. Heck, if I can trick enough users and generate at least a million dollars of "borrowed" money, then I can earn some money from some investment interest. I can then return the money to the users' accounts after.
If someone works for PayPal, please comment on this. The guy that I talked to on the phone had no clue about the error page.
As a side note, I made a comment about using Google Checkout for Ebay auctions on their PayPal forum. My post was promptly deleted.
