Paypal + ebay question

What's the point of sending an e-check? If your account is on file why not just send an instant payment? A buyer sent me an e-check but I'm not going to send his item until it clears. Kind of defeats the purpose of using Paypal no?

IIRC, an e-check does not require a credit card to be attached to the account. I could be wrong, though..
