We have unlocked nexus phones, I have a lot of texts about 300/month, use less than 40 min of talk on the phone, right now use less than 100mb.

Other phone uses 100 min talk, 30 text, and 10mb of data. I think I'm way over paying and since I'm not locked in I can go to any gsm carrier.

The worst part is I can't make phone calls on tmobile indoors at our place so I've been calling on my computer.

What are some cheaper options. Thanks

You can pay $35/month for unlimited talk, text, and 1 GB of data on Cricket Wireless. They use AT&T and generally have better reception overall than T-Mo. Obviously, it isn't going to save you much more money. There are other MVNOs that are probably better for you like H20 Wireless or the like.

If you're interested in Cricket though, let me know, and I can send you an invite and we both get a $25 credit.

For your second phone where you barely use the phone, you can use H2O Wireless $10 prepaid which is good for 90 days. H2O Wireless uses AT&T network. In your above usage scenario, it would've costed you $7.50 for that month. It's $.05 a minute for voice, $.05 for text, and $.10 for a mb of data. You can pick up new sim card kit from EBay or Amzon for $1 or less.

So maybe a combination of this + Cricket or all in with H2O.

Good luck, OP.

I agree with the above but I'm going to concentrate on the phones that use more minutes, text and data.

To maximize your savings, you'll want to create separate accounts for each phone, yes that means no family or group plans.

dlock13 absolutely nailed it and if you're ready to switch now, you can save even more by stacking several promos:

1) Cricket Referral earns both parties $25, do this first.

2) Cricket Wireless is offering $100 to T-Mobile/MetroPCS (some T-Mo MVNO's qualify) customers who port in, it's automatic you don't have to do anything. Just remember to PORT YOUR NUMBER!

3) As mentioned above Cricket recently increased data for a limited time. My 2.5GB has increased to 3GB, RossMAN seal of approval.

A few other things based on personal experience:
  • I ported from T-Mo MVNO to Cricket then referred my wife, we both received $25 credit.
  • My wife and I each received $100 credit for porting in from a qualified T-Mo MVNO.
  • Sign up for auto pay which gives you a $5 discount, you cannot stack auto pay + group plan discount, trust me I already tried.
  • Cricket used to have a bad reputation which it deserved. May 2014 it was re-launched, it's basically AT&T but cheaper.
  • Our bill is $50 - $5 auto pay = $45 per month, no taxes or weird regulatory fees.
  • Short codes (SMS) such as UPS notifications, banking, RedBox actually work!

Now for the bad:
  • AFAIK activation and SIM card are $25 which is way overpriced when you can routinely buy T-Mo SIM for $0.01 with free shipping.
  • Download speeds aren't as fast as T-Mo (YMMV depending on your area), doesn't matter to me since I don't stream video or music, just pictures, games, news and apps.
  • Cricket dealers, 1-800 and online chat support leave a lot to be desired. Have your facts straight, document everything and be prepared to be frustrated, misinformed and whatever else that will drive you absolutely bonkers and make you question your sanity. Fortunately our service has been solid so I rarely have to interact with them.

Bottom line: Cricket Wireless offers the best bang for your buck and coverage of any pre-paid carrier.

Hope this helps :)

Hey guys sorry I haven't checked in lately but I'd like to thank everyone for their advice and time. I've been using google voice which I greatly prefer but once I get a text on google voice it automatically also sends the same text to my google hangouts (ie my actually cell number) is there a way to disable this? Thanks

I think you're mixing the two (text in google hangouts != your actual cell number), but yes you could choose to just receive one and not the other.

The system is now still a little confusing. Hopefully they cleaned it up soon.

this is some very useful info for anyone looking to change. I haven't made the switch yet but I figure since I'm using the google voice /hangouts 99% of the time, I won't get charge texts and supposedly hangouts does voice calling now, so I won't use my minutes?
