Is it like an underground chute system or something that collects and sends all the coins to a central location somewhere?

(I've had a few beers, so excuse me if this question is dumb.:D)

This sounds more like a "dumb stoner" question than a "dumb drunk" question but oh well... Yeah the coins just fall into a small,safe-like box.

And remember... There are no stupid questions. Only stupid people. ;)

Eventually the money goes to the people who own the pay phone. This may not actually be the phone company. The owner of the pay phone simply has to pay the phone bill and they can keep the rest of the money.

Verizon payphones in NYC are now 50 cents !!! That really irks me, they were just a dime not too long ago.

This may force me into finally gettin a cell.

50 cents in the southeast also. I'd say that's the norm most places.

Actually, the payphones of the world are connected by a very elaborate network of small tunnels through which many Swiss Banking Gnomes constantly run, ferrying the coins back from the slot to the giant "World Domination Fund" in the heart of Switzerland.
Did you ever notice that back in the 20 cent days you didn't get a nickel back if you put in a quarter?
Just another part of the conspiracy. I'd tell you more, but as a practicing subgenius, I must decline. I have better things to not do.

yeah 50cents prob. bec. they're losing people to cell phones so they have to raise the cost 100% from 25cents to 50. here in the city it's an eroding situation for the phone companies, they have to maintain them while some people keep on defacing them and making them dirty, breaking them and everything, while less and less people use them due to cell phones. i'd much rather use a cellphone than breathe into those dirty handsets.

in Japan virtually every public pay phone WORKS. it doesn't spit out the change you just put it, it has a dial tone, they're clean, etc.
(because the citizens care, and the kids are respectful) and so while they're probably the cellphone capitol of the world, there are MORE public phone booths than we have here still.

A friend of mine insists that an underground chute system is indeed used for many payphones.

Heh, I'm old enough to remember payphones costing a dime as being the norm. Frankly though with cell phones, I'm surprised most payphones aren't up to 50 cents yet.

Actually, the base contains a coin collating device, separating dimes, nickles and quarters.

After collation, the coins are wrapped in coin wrappers and the bank of said vendor picks up the coins each Wednesday at noon. :D
