I'm in a bit of conundrum. In the six months or so I've been hit with the need for a good smartphone. At my last upgrade I really didn't have the same need/desire to keep connected to the web and the like at all times, so I got a Motorola Krave ZN4. I hate it. 'nuff said on that one :)

Anyways, my next "new every 2" isn't here until December 15th. I've come to the realization that I just don't think I'm going to be able to wait that long.

So, I had CONSIDERED just breaking down and buying a Droid Incredible (which is what I really want) at full price. Then again, that's a $330 premium over what I'll pay if I can wait 7 months.

My other thought was to buy something like a Samsung Omnia, which I can find used for around $100, and use that until December then upgrade at promo pricing (which might even be lower by then.

Any thoughts? Buy Incredible now? Buy Omnia (or something else) and wait?

may want to ask Verizon if they will offer you an early upgrade date. I can recall VZW offering customers an earlier upgrade date if they bought the Motorola DROID.

You do know that the primary line on plans 49.99 and up is eligible for an annual upgrade, right? Can you take advantage of that?

The Incredible is selling out. They aren't going to give an early upgrade on a phone they can't keep in stock. Now if the OP is willing to go with a Droid they might bite.

If you're on a family plan, take an upgrade from another member.

I wouldn't pay full price for the incredible when you're getting a free phone upgrade anyway, and better stuff will be available by the time of your upgrade. Snapdragon may be all the rage now, but Cortex A9 and HDMI output will probably be common place by next December.

But if you're that desperate for a connected phone, a cheap Omnia or blackberry or so on wouldn't be a bad choice. You'll probably be able to get at least $50 for it if you sell it in December, or just keep it as a back up. Omnia isn't a terribly impressive device, but Opera Mobile makes the web experience not too bad, and you could always get SPB Mobile to spruce up the UI a bit.

i love my omnia. i am waiting until november (my upgrade time) to look at maybe changing phones, by then more new phones will be out and ill be able to check out the wp7 phone (hopefully) and decide if i want an omnia 2, wp7 or an android thing. id say if you want a smart phone and cant wait, id drop the 100 for a used decent phone rather than 550 on an incredible.

I'd definitely call VZW and see what they say. Chances are they'll help you out in some way to get an upgrade.

When I lost my cell phone and wanted a smart phone as a replacement, Verizon let me upgrade early with a 1-year contract extension. I had to pay the one-year contract price, which was more $$$, but still much less than the full price. They were very helpful - maybe they'll be willing to do this for you too.

If Verizon's not helpful and makes you pay full price, feel free to bluntly remind a manager in the store that it's cheaper for you to breach the contract, pay the ETF, and get a phone you really want on another network.

i tried that one time, the guy said "sorry to see you leave the vzw family" and walked away. i have horrible luck with that kind of threat, so i dont play it. i would still call and see what they will do, the 1 yr contract price as well as an internet discount may get you a free or close to free upgrade. they make more money on the service than the phone anyway, hehe.

I'd just completely wait. I definitely wouldn't pay full price for it (unless you have that kind of cash to throw around). It is a great phone, but not for $529.

I think you should just wait the 7 months with the phone you have now. Second choice would be to get the Omnia. By December, there should be lots of new phones (iPhone, Shadow, Droid 2, Nexus 2 [which might be the Shadow]).
