So I filled my tires with air at a gas station last night, and I noticed that the air compressor is free to use, but you have to pay for the vacuum. In both cases, a motor of some type is running when you use the equipment. And it's not like the air runs out or the vacuum stops sucking.

Is this because having underinflated tires is dangerous, but having cookie crumbs on the back seat is not a big deal? And anyways, even if the vacuum was free, I can't imagine why it would be abused.

"Now I'm going to intentionally crush this bag of Sun Chips and dump them all over my upholstery. Why how convenient, a free vacuum! Don't mind if I do!"

one is a compressor, the other is a fan.

also, there is a difference between convenience, being able to fill up your tires with air is better than being able to clean your car.

That makes sense. I guess both machines have the potential to break down and need servicing, but emptying the vacuum is an extra cost. The funny thing is that the first two stations I went to had broken air compressors lol. Third time lucky!
