"Pay as you use" or "Pay ahead" Dial up?

I am trying to remember (it's hell getting old) where I saw this but I can't. I know that the discussion was about a dial up service that you had two choices of use/payment. One was to pay ahead for a certain number of hours and the other was just to establish an account and then you would only get charged for the time you used the dial up. Anyone hear of this?
To answer the obvious questions, I was thinking of this for simple vacation use when I get that--"I gotta check my email" or "I wonder if anyone replied to my ATOT thread", kind of feeling; not long term use. I have cable service here at home.
I appreciate any help you can provide on this.

Thanks for the suggestion but that is not what I am looking for. I believe the service in question has an 800 number for dialing in which would be better in "isolated" locations or other circumstances. But thanks.
