how does one do aware?
60 days on some plans... I really want a contract free cell for work, but don't know what kind of coin I'll have to drop on the initial phone. That seems to be the major drawback in these...they rape you on the equipment.Originally posted by: DaTT
On a more serious note, I would assume that most pay as you go phones are going to be similar in price. Just keep in mind that you minutes generally expire after 90 days?

I use a T-Mobile, pay as you go. Paid $99.00, got a $50.00 rebate, for my Nokia 6800.
Have spent roughly around $100.00 on it for the minutes, since last May. It's basically paid for itself, and then some. Of course look around, shop the deals.
I really like this plan, I don't use my cell phone much, when I DO need it, it's great. 🙂
Oh since I have reached a $100.00 the minute price has dropped 15%.

I know for Sprint you don't have to sign a contract if you pay full price for the phone (or just get a used one off ebay) and add $10 to the cost of the plan.

Ok....that's fine if you need limited minutes. I was simply stating if you actually need a good amount of minutes per month you don't have to pay the ridiculous charges for prepaid. $100 a month will buy at least 1000 minutes from any of the major carriers. This is a rip-off how?
I use maybe 3000 minutes a month. Tell me how I'm being ripped off......

I didn't say you're being ripped off if you use 3000 minutes for $100. But for someone who wants to use prepaid because a regular plan costs too much, it doesn't make sense to go with Cingular, Tmobile, Sprint, etc. $1 to connect? $10 for no minutes? Come on!

The last time I researched this Virginmobile was the cheapest way to go if you are not using many minutes (haven't checked in a while though, I use maybe 20 minutes a month). It is $20 every 90 days or $15 if you use the auto-topup (not sure of this, they don't really advertise it, just signed up for it), the $ you pay in never expires unless you let your account lapse for more than 60 days. You can get a refurb phone for $25 from Virgin mobile website (cheapest new one is $40). If you actually intend to use the phone a lot their rates aren't that good.
I use mine just for emergencies and to call people I am meeting if I am running late or something, I use a landline if I actually want to talk to someone for any length of time.
