I'm going to be in the US for 4-6 weeks and am not up to date on pay as you go services. Any recommendations? I'm mostly going to be doing a road trip around a few states and need data and gps. Some minutes and SMS allowance is good though.

I don't have a 4G phone so that doesn't make a difference. Odds are I'll upgrade my phone to the Moto G while I'm home.

if you are bringing your own phone, the only choices would be GSM providers (AT&T, T-mobile)

would definitely recommend at&t over t-mobile if you are exploring USA (t-mobile's rural service is still crappy)

how much data do you need? choose between
StraightTalk (AT&T service, $45 for 2.5GB + unlimited talk/text, hard throttle after cap)
AIO Wireless (owned by at&t, unlimited talk/text, $40 for 500MB, $50 @ 2.5GB, $60 @ 5GB, throttled after cap at 128kbps)
Cricket Wireless (owned by at&t, but more expensive than the ones above)
AT&T's "official" GoPhone plans (more expensive than above)

would recommend AIO Wireless because you can choose higher data caps and their throttle isn't as bad

do you need international calling?

I won't need any international calling. I just need to be able to do some minor phone calls to organize meeting friends and family and the rest will probably be data. I don't like talking on the phone.

I don't think I'd need more than 2.5GB on the road so maybe the straight talk plan would be fine.

Can I buy the global Moto G and still be fine with 3G in the states?

global Moto G works 100% with at&t 2G/3G

global Moto G only works with t-mobile's refarmed 1900mhz 3G, not AWS 3G. Works on 2G

just pre-cache Google maps on wifi so that you can save on data ...
