You pay $50 to pay more? That's ridiculous. If anything charge $55 or $60 for the game of you need the money that bad.

Hm i'm a fan of subscriptions such as those in MMOG and MMORPG, but those require dedicated persistent servers. HL2 doesn't require that, so wtf are they charging for? The service of finding other servers to play on?

You mean I have to buy the game as well, I really don't like the sound of that at all! :(

They are relesing 3 versions
one that is only single player
one that is a full version mp and sp
and one that you pay a monthly fee for but get free patches and expansions instead of paying to buy the expansions in a store.

LOL "monthly fee" my a$$. I'll stick to UT2003, or even Kingpin for that matter before I'll send Gabe $9.95/month.

If you pay the monthly fee you get access to ALL Steam content which will conceivably include future games such as CS2 DOD2 TF2 (mods/games using the Source engine). I'm guessing that if you purchase the retail version in a store, you will also have to buy each of these games separaetly since Valve owns them all and the dev time with source is too much to give them away (especially CS due to its popularity).

Steam frightens me, just because I've seen mass services run ohh so well in the past, EA anyone? Sure you pay a monthly fee or can use it during the full versions play but what happens when Valve says enough and you still want to play your friend? I'm sure there's at least 2 people right now wishing they could play eachother in MotorCity. Add to that the great success of WON from the same people. I've played many an online only game and shoveled forth the online fee in great amounts during Air Warrior's legacy, I eve pre-payed a full year of WWIIOL (at least I got a T-shirt) but for this sort of game, it just doesnt feel right? It's like I can understand paying for icehockey in RL, but to pay for basketball, football or baseball for just your friends in a quick pick-up game?

ROFL!

On another forum a guy remarked "so if you downloaded HL2 off kazaa you could just pay the monthly subscription without buying the game?". He was joking but perhaps there was some truth to what he said. If access was that easy - download off kazaa (illegaly) then paying the subscription, the game would become very popular. If I could get a game like JK2 for $10 (1 monthly fee) by downloading it and it would work, I would totaly do that. Currently I'm not willing to pay like $40 for JK2 though so right now I don't get the game and they dont' get the money. The subscription might be a happy medium for cheap skates like me.

Gabe might use it for a Big Mac Meal

Gabe does not eat Big Macs, they are far too healthy and low fat/low calorie for him.

Gabe is subsisting on Homer Simpson Moon Waffles these days:
Homer's Space Age(out of this world) Moon Waffles
[9F01] Homer the Heretic

ingredients:
1 package of caramel squares
2 cups waffle batter
1 bottle liqiud smoke
1 stick of butter
instuctions:
place caramel in the waffle iron
pour on waffle batter
add liquid smoke to taste
cook thoroughly
take the stick of butter and wrap the moon waffle around it
place it on a toothpic and serve

makes 1 unfortunate serving

"mmmmmmm... fattening......"
