Pawn Shops

I'm looking for a smaller 20-24" TV and I've heard that some of the pawn shops near here have a decent selection. I'm just wondering if any of you purchase a lot of stuff from pawn shops, from tools to electronics, and what type of success/failure rates you've had with these purchases. For example, have you bought a TV? Did it work more than a month? That sort of thing.

Also, how much bargaining leeway is typical of pawn shops?

Well, I'm looking for good ones. Not a Sylvania. 😛 I'm actually looking at a Sony WEGA right now but I figure it never hurts to look into other avenues than Best Buy and Circuit City for that sort of thing.

*EDIT* The thing that sparked this is that I received a PM from a local guy who saw the thread in my sig. He said he saw a 27" WEGA w/ 2-tuner PiP at a local pawn shop for $250. I'm more than likely going to head out there tomorrow and pick it up if its still there but I just wanted to hear some pawn shop stories before I do.

I would be surprised if anyone on here or anywhere bought anything from a pawn shop nowadays...everyone wants new new new...personally while I haven't purchased from a pawn shop I have bought things from the want advertiser, ebay and also a flea market or two...craigs list is also good for electronics.

Oops, I just noticed that I wrote 'flea market' instead of 'pawn shop' when referring to where the 27" wega was found.

And Boz, I guess you're right. I've never bought anything from a pawn shop and I guess I haven't even been to a flea market since I was a little kid.

yeah, I haven't been to a flea market since I was a teenager and haven't seen too many advertised since...wouldn't be surprised if they fade out of existance, people today love new and rarely consider used...I myself generally buy new things even though I know I could save alot with used...then again nothing is made to last any longer so used really isn't an option for most things.

Oh, they still exist. They're all over the place in East TN. But then again, we're near the mountains and I think there's something about progress and mountains that just don't mix well. 😉

I purchased a 19" KDS monitor from a pawn shop about 5 years ago for $150 out the door. Thought that was a good purchase at the time and the thing held up over the years.

Haven't bought anything since then nor before then though.

I love flea markets, great deals on great cool things...and im 20....my family makes trips out to pidgeon forge TN every few summers(so many go-kart tracks...OMG!!!) its an awesome time and we hit several antique malls and flea markets on the way, my dad collects shot glasses (>2000 of them now) and i collect the old hess trucks. plus you never know when you'll find some nice jewelry for the woman.

I'd say keep an eye open on ebay and FS/FT....that $250 sounds like a good deal for a 27" wega, im getting a 32" panny for $200...but thats a special deal

SoCal: There are two "Swap Meets" (flea markets) that I visit regularly. One is in Cypress at Cypress College, the other is in Huntington Beach at Golden West College.

I've bought all kinds of stuff at them, and made good money buying stuff and selling on eBay. LoL

Sounds good guys. Mellman, Pigeon Forge is awesome. I can't really speak for the flea markets/antique malls, but they do have some really nice outlet malls now. Plus, once you get past Pigeon Forge, further into the mountains, you get to see some of the most beautiful land in the entire country.

I haven't found any pawn shops around here that aren't ridicuously overpriced...the last one I went to had an old (probably about 10 year old) Sony MiniDisc player for $180 - I could probably get one like it on ebay for about $20.

Well, that's one of the things I'm wondering about them. Do they do that just in case they find a sucker? If you offer them $20 will they take it? I guess I'll find out on my lunch break today.

Best and only Pawn Shop purchase: Hohner Pro Bass V 5-String active Passive Bass Guitar for $105. Best bass I have ever owned.

A good 60-70% of that stuff is probably hot. I've only bought guitars from pawn shops...not sure I would trust electronics.

You never know......Sometimes pawn shops may get "good ones" but usually the owners
or the owner's buddies seem to get all the good stuff before it ever hits the shelf in the
"for sale" area of the shop.

But a guy can dream can't he? 🙂

Make sure you are pretty knowledgeable on the general prices of whatever you wish to purchase beforehand. Pawn shops are a mixed blessing. Some things are a great value and others are laughably overpriced. If I am tempted, but unsure, I will leave and find the new price before considering going back and buying it at the pawn shop.

I got a good deal on my weedwhacker I bought in the Spring. I always check the manufacture date stickers on electronics and equipment. Make sure you do that as well.

I bought a nice TEAC reciever and 2 really nice kenwood floor speakers from a pawn shop just over 2 years ago. I still have both of them and they both work great.

I've only ever shopped for Craftsman and Mac tools at pawn shops. Lifetime replacement warranties took care of any doubts, and I put together most of my tool collection $0.15-$1.00 at a time.

Pawn shops in Central Flroida rule... pawn shops in Central Illinois and California blow.
