Pawn Shops

Hey, can someone tell me how a pawn shop works? How do they calculate the amount of money they will give you? Do they just straight out buy the stuff from you for cash? And do they take anything, or only certain things or only things that they consider valuable?

They pay you about 25-50% of what they think they could sell it for. Often less. Yes, they will buy things with no loan agreement.

They only take something they think they can resell.

Pawn shops are a great place to buy used CDs on the cheap. My favorite one around here has a couple thousand CDs for $4 each and offers a 30 day warranty. Only problem is they're not in any order so it takes an hour or so to browse. The selections aren't always good but occasionally you come across a gem (I found some Michael Hedges CDs one day).

Same for DVDs. I found the Simpsons 2nd season for 16.00. I've found other great titles for 4 to 6.00 a pop.

I just sold a pretty crappy practice amp to a pawn shop today. Only got $20, but the amp had some oxidation on the back anyway. They take down a lot of your information though...DLN and I had to give a thumbprint.

a pawn shop is a place where you are given a loan using your stuff as collateral. They cannot sell your goods until a certain time has elapsed and you can get your good back using the claim ticket they give you. Often tho, people just go fsck it and and let their items go on sale.

Pawn shops are a good place to get guitar and stereo equipment now and then. Although a lot of it is probably stolen.

Pawn shops must send their inventory to the local law enforcement agencies everyday and must keep items in the back for 90 days to see if anything is reported missing or stolen. Linky
