UPDATED 4:47 p.m.
DENVER (AP) - Republican presidential candidate John McCain decided on a running mate early Thursday, and one top prospect, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, abruptly canceled numerous public appearances.

The Arizona senator will appear with his No. 2 at an Ohio rally on Friday, aides said, though they provided no details on who McCain had picked.

Without explanation, Pawlenty called off an Associated Press interview at the last minute, as well as other media interviews in Denver, site of the Democratic National Convention.

interesting coincidence, looks like the reps are trying hard to win minn. this year.

I hope so, I'm more worried about him picking a female or Jindal.

edit: as an Obama supporter

It looks like he is heading that way.

Nice guy, good story, but doesn't add anything major to the ticket. I guess this is a 'safe' pick.

i think the idea is that they win minnesota.

imo none of the front runners for vp really had much to offer the ticket.

I doubt they win Minnesota because of him.

They had a FAR better chance of winning Michigan with Romney on the ticket.

He has good leadership skills. Has had to deal with a good majority dfl in the state house. Which is what a McCain administration will have to deal with. Came in having to clean up Ventura's disasterous reign of power. Balanced the budget without having to raise taxes.

Hard to say. Kerry and Gore won MN by 2 and 3% points. And the race between McCain and Obama has been close at times. If it turns out to be something like the last two elections. 2-3% points can be made up with him on the ticket.

Not only does he help in the fight for Minnesota, but his presence might make neighboring barely-blue states Iowa and Wisconsin interesting (currently Obama leads McCain by about 5% in each of those 3 states).

Even if McCain ultimately doesn't win any of them, it will force Obama to spend time and money in those 3 states to ensure they stay blue.

I would've preferred someone exciting, but this is a good safe pick...

and if he is in support of government healthcare for kids, that might help hedge against the economy/healthcare voters

I'm fascinated with the current Conservative Republican love affair with Romney. Until he decided to run for president this cycle, he was a Liberal Massachusetts Republican. He reinvented himself for this campaign, and suddenly he's the Great Right Hope.

The Mittster flip-flops so strongly, he makes John Kerry look principled!

Romney is a douchebag, was a douchebag, and will always be a douchebag. What kind of Republican implements UHC?

He's also an intelligent businessman.

Frankly, its kind of stupid to pick Pawlenty unless this is the reason for it.

55% approval rating in a fairly reliable blue state isn't too shabby for a Republican-- but you're right... I'm not sure if his stature is such that it could sway Minnesota into voting for Bush.

I would be surprised to see McCain take MN with or without Pawlenty, but he is young, telegenic, and has solid conservative credentials. McCain openly disliked Romney during the Republican primaries, and he doesn't strike me as a guy who wants to deal with a tool like Romney for a VP. At this point I'd be surprised if Pawlenty isn't the guy.

Actually my law partner will be in Pawlenty's skybox at the Xcel Center in St Paul on Wednesday (he is an old friend and advisor of Pawlenty's) - if Pawlenty is the VP pick, that'll be the hottest ticket in town.

I wouldnt read anything into him canceling appointments.

Several people have done the same. There will be half a dozen people who could be VP there tomorrow. I honestly dont believe it will Romney or Pawlenty.

What I find odd is, Ive heard the Texas Railroad Commissioner will be there, to introduce McCain and his VP. Maybe its to add a minority to the stage. I dont know.

I dont see McCain picking Hutchinson. And theres no other credible VP candidate from TX.

Honestly, I believe Jindal would be the best pick, but unlike other politicians, I believe Jindal when he says he has more work to do in LA.

Jindal is the future of the national republican party.
