paused/slow minimizing to system tray..?

using pretty much fresh Win 2000 prof install on fat32 partition, installed very few programs (systemworks, winamp, starcraft), yet i have horribly slow minimizes to system tray, flashfxp (1.2) specifically. from clicking minimize to tray to the actual minimizing, it takes perhaps 5-8secs! similar situation with winamp. i tried uninstalling both programs and deleting all related regedit entries, then reinstalled, but still same problems. also have tried defragmenting, but no luck. any suggestions?
