Without us, there is a chance that the rest would not be free enough to post their opinions of us.

My family has a long history of military service, thanks to all who wear our nation's uniform with honor.

There's a noble core of military service involved in protecting the US. Unfortunately, IMO, the large majority of the use of the military is for less than noble purposes.

Was Thomas Jefferson 'unpatrotic' for strongly opposing any stanidng military and saying that one is incompatible with this nation's security and ideals?

While times have changed to make a standing military needed, I think we need to give voice to the cautions of the potential for abusive policies as well as the positive services.

I think part of honoring service people is to remind them of the importance not to serve wrongful policies. I think it may be more patriotic not to enlist in our current situation.

It's an appropriate topic for reposting the comment by the then-highest decorated military figure in US history, Gen. Smedley Butler, as he considered the battles he'd fought:

"I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested."

Because I think this is exactly the day and topic for pointing out the truth, and that you are the ass, the ignorant ass. So let's not pollute the thread with more bickering.

Blind worship of the military - miilitarism - might make you get a 'woodie' and feel all warm and fuzzy, but it hurts service people, among others.

So it's precisely in a place blind worship is concentrated that pointing out the problem with it makes sense.

You knew damn well when you posted that bullshit what would happen. Use the other 364 days for your moralistic rants, can't you just honor and look at the GOOD veterans have done for one fucking day?

To be honest it was EagleKeeper that started political discussion here. If you want to direct your anger at moving this thread off topic, direct it at him.

Sorry but I disagree. IMO your rant has no place in this 'salute to veterans' thread. There's a time and place. This isn't it.

No, I don't know if you will act badly or not. I'll use 365 days, and especially this one, to say what's important for veterans. You have your view, I have mine.

My post began with the good veterans do. You did not acknowledge anything, you did not say one word contributing to the topic, you just posted an empty attack.

You're the one one doing a disservice to veterans. It's precisely the blind censorship you call for that there's no problem that's the problem that lulls people in.

You want to bicker, fine, your choice.

For example, Vietnam turned hundreds of thousands of good men into murderers. That's a 'veteran's issue'. Pretending otherwise just invites it to be repeated.

Not only men I think were good generally, but even ones who came to be liberal leaders were lulled in, like Gore and Kerry.

The favor for veterans is to say both the good they do and the mythology fed to them as lies, that all their actions are 'defending the freedom of America' when that's not true.

It's not because the service and sacrifice from them is not real and nobly intended on their part, but precisely because it's so often used for wrong purposes, there's a problem.

You want to demand that anything other than "thank you for your wonderful service for defending our freedom" is not allowed, as if that's disrespectful to them.

I think that abusing their good intentions and their well-being is the disrespect.

Attacking the fact that I think a veteran's day thread is exactly where the propaganda needs to be challenged isn't going to do what you want - it'll just get discussed more.

So leave the comment, and make your own comment about veterans, rather than turning it into more bickering.

There is nothing political, or even debatable, about what EagleKeeper said. All he said was that there is a chance, that without the sacrifice of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines, that this would not be a free country. You might disagree with the politics of certain wars, or even the military in general, but that doesn't change the fact that without our military, we would have been conquered by another nation at some point in the history of our country.

I know it's a day late, but thanks to all of those serving and their families.
