Without us, there is a chance that the rest would not be free enough to post their opinions of us.
There's a noble core of military service involved in protecting the US. Unfortunately, IMO, the large majority of the use of the military is for less than noble purposes.
Was Thomas Jefferson 'unpatrotic' for strongly opposing any stanidng military and saying that one is incompatible with this nation's security and ideals?
While times have changed to make a standing military needed, I think we need to give voice to the cautions of the potential for abusive policies as well as the positive services.
I think part of honoring service people is to remind them of the importance not to serve wrongful policies. I think it may be more patriotic not to enlist in our current situation.
It's an appropriate topic for reposting the comment by the then-highest decorated military figure in US history, Gen. Smedley Butler, as he considered the battles he'd fought:
"I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested."
