I just recently re-installed Win98SE (twice) and both times, before I install any other software, the computer will boot up fine. But, once the desktop appears, the hourglass/pointer cursor appears. I can move the mouse around and click on stuff, but it doesn't take right away. For instance, if I click on the Start button while it is in this state, the menu will appear in about five seconds. After the five sconds is up, the computer runs fine. It just seems like there is some intense processing going on in the background upon startup. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? The only thing I've done differently is create an 80MB swapfile instead of letting Windows manage my memory.
