Paula Dean's fake tears and her telling the Today show "I is what I is.."

I watched the video and couldn't help but feel this was all melodramatic and fake. Then what I really thought was over the top was her exclaming; "I is what I is".. just sounded well, fake and phoney to me.

What I didn't realize is some of the deposition (really amazing transcripts) showed how racist and hostile the work enviroment really was, here are some excerpts from the deposition;

Apparently it was an employee who consequently was jewish and endured jewish epithats from her employers not to mention very blatant sexual harrassment, who finally had enough after years of complaining and filed the lawsuit.

Read the article that talks about the events below, and yes it is from the Wonkette, but they have actually testimony and deposition transcripts / video of Paula Dean and it does bring up some things that the media didn't. I know, I know, Wonkette is a very feminist news blog site, but I read it once in a while as some of their stuff is actually entertaining..I am not turning in my man card. LOL

http://wonkette.com/520923/olympic-fake-crying-champeen-paula-deen-goes-on-today-cries-and-cries-is-very-sorry-for-her

Excerpts; It seems — it is possible — that diabeetus queen Paul Deen is perhaps and maybe not the nice lady she pretends to be on her television program, “Cooking Hot Garbage With Paula Deen.” Lisa Jackson is a woman who worked as a restaurant manager for Deen for so many years, turning around a failing business in such an accomplished manner that Deen’s brother Bubba (because of course) fondly called her his “little Jew girl” (for being so awesome at money). She was danged good at her job, is what we are saying! But Jackson finally had enough with the getting manhandled by Bubba, who was always morning-drunk-on-bourbon-from-a-Styrofoam-cup and having him show her so much porn constantly and always getting told by him about how she should give blowjobs, and getting paid a fraction of what male managers a rank below her were getting paid for far less work and responsibility, and trying without success to shield her black employees from constantly getting called “******s” and “monkeys” and being told they couldn’t use the front door or the white bathroom or work in the front of the restaurant and SO MUCH MORE, and she complained FOR YEARS about all of it and nobody cared, and she finally quit and filed a lawsuit. All props to Lilly Ledbetter, but the Lilly Ledbetter Act that mandates equal pay for women should have probably been called the Paula Deen Act, if you could find a way to fit all her horrible racism into it too.

As for the sexism — in addition to the porn and the sexual harrassment — Jackson got paid less than male managers below her general manager rank, plus they got vacation, bonuses, and retirement, which Jackson didn’t get because duh lady. When she asked for proper compensation, she was told Bubba would never countenance a skirt gettin’ paid like the big boys. And Paula Deen knew about all of it, and Bubba’s her brother, and her gross sons and sons’ friends worked there too and pulled the same shit, like with the calling of the African-American employees “monkeys” and other such hallmarks of a racially transcendent workplace that could in no way be sued for a hostile work environment or basic civil rights violations. Go ahead and read the lawsuit. It’s a corker! Paula Deen for president and stuff.

I don't see Paula Deen's name on there, just Bubba Hiers. Who, judging by the transcript, is just another racist asshole who fulfills the (unjustified) stereotype other people have of Southerners as boorish, racist hicks. What a moron.

Paula Deen is the restaurant owner, and I believe she is being sued. As owner, she's liable even if she knew nothing about it, but there are allegations that she did know. Also, she's on record saying that she herself has frequently used "the N word" although she claims she uses it only in a non-disparaging manner. LOL.

They owned a restaurant where the black employees weren't allowed to use the front door. Sounds like the whole family is pure southern fried human garbage.

Bubba isn't their real name though, its a term of endearment, or nickname like the word "boo". I have a brother who we call bubba but that isn't his real name.

Did she then crush a container of butter into her mouth and swallow it?

It's hard to give her benefit of doubt ("I've grown up in the South") considering that she has been traveling all over the world in her adult life. We can't prosecute private discriminations and biases, but we need not give them effect.

What makes this entire interview even more funny. Is that "I is what I is" is a punchline to a racist joke.

There was a black guy and a white guy. They were debating over
whether god was white or black. The white guy said that there
was only one way to find out and that is to pray. So they go up
on a hill and they pray, and pray, and pray. Finally they here a
voice say, "I am what I am." The white guy jumps up, and says,
"AHA I told you he was white." The black guy jumps up and says,
"What do you mean? That didn't prove anything." "Yes it did,
Because if he was black he would've said I is what I is."

I haven't been following the details of the story. But if true, about being barred from the front door and bathrooms, it's far more revelatory & heinous than the simple use of an objectionable word thirty years ago. I can't even wrap my brain around it.

Though there was always something about Dean that rubbed me wrong.

I have a problem believing the story. "I was a much better employee, made the store profitable, was paid a fraction of what lower level and less capable male employees under me were paid, did not get the benefits others got, was constantly sexually and ethnically harassed, treated like a second class citizen, assaulted, battered, and generally abused, and after five years I'm fed up." WTF?

Was this lady somehow under the impression that she was owned and unable to find another job? Were her tits nailed to her desk? Restaurant managers jump jobs a LOT, and good ones are always in demand. There's also an effective underground network of servers who share stories as they jump between jobs of which managers are good and which are horrible. I have no problem believing there can be a man this horrible, but why on Earth would a woman who evidently places herself slightly above Jesus choose to spend five years in Hell for poor pay, no benefits, and actual crimes against her? Just doesn't add up.

I feel like that has to be blown out of proportion. Maybe she didn't want cooks using the front door because there was a back door and people who work in the back shouldn't work through the front of house and dining areas to get to their post. Maybe also the bathrooms were the guest bathrooms? I understand she's a racist, but I would have to think that that treatment of her employees would have been enough to warrant her demise on its own merits. Not a tag-along story to her being videotaped telling racist jokes to patrons.
