Appearing on Meet The Press, newly elected House Speaker Paul Ryan was directly asked by host Chuck Todd to name one thing he could accomplish in the first six months that “the country will be impressed with.”

Ryan did not answer.

Instead, Ryan went through a litany of Republican talking points. “Working families are falling behind, the economy is stale… our foreign policy is a disaster,” Ryan said.

He then retreated to even safer ground: Obamacare. “Look at the the disaster that the rollout of Obamacare is continuing to be,” the new House speaker opined, still not answering the question.

The difficulty is that, despite Ryan’s election as Speaker, the Republican Congressional delegation remains bitterly divided. Ryan will have to reckon with the House Freedom Caucus, which is pushing for an even more confrontational approach with President Obama and Democrats in Congress.

Ryan, perhaps to placate the Freedom Caucus, has already agreed to rule out bringing comprehensive immigration reform to the floor of the House. Previously, Ryan had championed comprehensive immigration reform and supported its passage.

He urged former Speaker John Boehner to bring a comprehensive bill to the House floor, even if most Republicans opposed it.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I wonder how long it will be before the Freedom Caucus calls for his head when it's time to fund the government again.

Please slowly step away from the internet. A break from politics will do wonders for your health.

Help Americans? FUCK NO!!!! Isn't that what the GOP does at every turn? Truth hurts, doesn't it?

How about helping Americans who are living in poverty despite working first? But I have a feeling that will be a no since they're so against "entitlement" and all for the rich guys.

Wouldn't you love for all to forget the status quo.

Funny because if you were elected speaker and asked what you could accomplish in 6 months, you could have an answer unless you're walking on hot coals just to amass enough support to be Speaker.

They'll vote to repeal Obamacare 50 more times.

Well it is the worse thing in history since slavery, can't blame 'em. Not sure why the OP is surprised, disgusted sure, but not surprised. Obstructionism is the rule, not the exception.

So you were looking for him to spout a bunch of bullshit? Man, it's no wonder Billary is your front-runner. You should have taken the first response to heart and backed away...

Haha quick clip from Ryan on Morning Joe. He's been looking at ways to purify his new office from smoke.

That isnt what he was asked. He was asked what can he accomplish in 6 months the country would be impressed with. There is no policy the country will be impressed with that will get passed in an election year.

He's a politician and they don't typically answer hypothetical questions. Ask him in six months hence what he DID then you can abuse him if he's done nothing.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Democrats can still make the Senate requires 60 votes, and the President has his veto. Nothing changed, Washington remains uncompromising and nothing will get done unless it's the Dem's agenda.

Good question: What are your top goals for the next six months?

Bad question: Predict the future. If you refuse to answer we will criticize you for not answering and if your predictions are less than 100% accurate we will criticize you in 6 months, with no guarantee that we will praise you if your predictions are 100% accurate.

Okay, there is partisan gridlock. Why can't he say "The Republicans in the House would like to XYZ, and are willing to negotiate with Democrats to implement those policies"? An honest, forthright answer that takes gridlock into account but puts forward ideas?

"Working families are falling behind" is not an answer.

Republicans haven't accomplished anything in the past 6 years, what makes anyone think they'll accomplish anything in the next 6 months?

Oh my, a politician was asked a question, and rambled on for a number of minutes without ever actually answering the question?
THIS IS A REVELATION
NEVER BEFORE IN HISTORY HAS SUCH A THING HAPPENED

A politician didn't answer a hypothetical question? OH LAWD!

how is "name one thing he could accomplish in the first six months that “the country will be impressed with.”" hypothetical. It's a real timeline, and it addresses his job.
Hypothetical not found

However, if he were to have asked, "if we are attacked again by terrorists on our soil, what would be your first course of action"

That is a hypothetical question.

No, sport, they're both hypotheticals. Maybe you should at least wait until he gets moved into his office? :\
