Paul McCartney or John Lennon, who was the better songwriter?

I have always been a John Lennon fan so I would say Lennon. McCartney did have a very good ear for pop music and was probably better at it in that sense. Together they complimented one another in a way that produced music far superior to what either did solo in my opinion.

I think it's just personal preference.

McCartney's had the most commercial success because of his ability to write a catchy, memorable melody. He also has penned some pretty goofy "love letters to Linda". Lennon's lyrics were superior in many cases - he was just a more philosophical fellow and he was more likely to incorporate a social commentary into his song. He also wrote songs that made absolutely no sense at all, however.

I do think they both learned from each other - you can find examples of their writing that seem to have borrowed from the other person. Lennon's "Good Night" is as syrupy and sentimental as anything McCartney wrote, while McCartney rocked out on songs such as "Helter Skelter" and "Oh! Darling".

Personally, I can't pick a favorite - even regarding their solo careers, I enjoy "Watching the Wheels" and "#9 Dream" just as much as "Band on the Run" and "Junk". You can't go wrong either way.
