Keep in mind, all this got caught by accident. Of course, he was looking for something, he was probably trying to establish more connections so that he could continue to get more loans to maintain his lifestyle or get some inside information to get rich quick. I think there are people that literally do this until they die. Just perpetually get loans that they know they can never repay.

His bankers turned him in for fraudulent information in obtaining loans. The FBI & European agencies have been sniffing around the now failed FBME bank of Cyprus for a long while. It seems obvious that once the financial shenanigans of Yanukovich were exposed then anybody close to him was going under the microscope, as well.
