Cliffs form:

1. Bought wife a Droid (A855) a while back, got her hooked on it.
2. Screen started flaking out when keyboard slid open.
3. Went to try to update it and remove the custom rom/kernel I put on it from way back so I could RMA it... slid out the keyboard, screen died, couldn't get it back this time.
4. "Oh shit" moment, due to it still being rooted with a custom rom & kernel.
5. Google, google and google some more.
6. Download RST Lite, original 2.1 OTA rom, and ...
7. "Blindly" flashed the Droid, without any way of knowing whether it worked or not. After a couple heart attacks (things didn't appear to go as planned), Droid apparently booted and was able to read some key data over USB on RST Lite.
8. RMA'd the damn thing - cut it close too, since it had a manufacture date of 42/09.

My wife is giddy, FedEx just dropped off her repaired Droid. Now I can ESN swap her off my old Eris and back onto her Droid, and hopefully get "rewarded" for my efforts later. ;)

not from anything I have read. I've yet to hear about an RMA being turned away from having a custom ROM

HTC threatens to void you warranty, and I've heard of them charging to repair phones that have been hacked, but honestly, I think most manufacturers just replace the things and don't bother...

Well, to be honest, I originally set about flashing it to see if maybe the kernel or the rom were causing the screen problems (prior, the screen would occasionally lock up when the keyboard was slid out, to the point of having to pull the battery to reboot). I didn't want to take a risk though. The Droid was bought out of pocket from a private party, so I had no other recourse short of getting her a new phone, which I'm not in a position to do. So I figured I'd do everything I had to in order to try to ensure a successful RMA.

Oh ok. If you bought it private party like that, then you did really good! Its HARD to get manufacturers to honor warranties when not going through a carrier.

Good job buddy! You get a gold star

I hate the feeling you get you you think you brick your phone... I accidentally zeroed out my recovery partition once when I was trying to zero out the kernel. I kept trying to boot into recovery to fix it but it would just hang.... I thought I was screwed until I realized I could still boot regularly and then reflash my recovery.

Being honest. When I was selling phones and someone came in with a phone off the street with problems...we told them to "contact the manufacturer" knowing that they would more than likely have to jump through hoops until they just gave up. Motorola in particular was famous for keeping phones for 5-6 weeks, charging the customer a bench test fee and then sending it back not fixed. If you got it repaired/replaced in a reasonable amount of time, you did good.

Yep. Sent it in on the 5th I believe. Got it back today. No questions asked. Wife checked it out, put the battery in, etc. Powered on apparently.

Tonight I will update it (she's on PagePlus, so manual updates for me) and get the ESN swapped back. Hopefully it'll be good for the next year or so.

I'll be honest and say I was kindof hoping they were going to just give me a Droid 2 or something in exchange, but I followed the RMA rules to the letter (keep the battery cover, battery, SD card, etc). Either way, my wife loved the Droid so it's all good.
