In this article, there is a mention of a Patriot Act which is already in effect. I havn't heard a peep about this. What is it? Sounds like some congressman decided to give up some of my liberties and privace in exchange for security (which I object to). Anyone got a clue?

Here is the full text of the Patriot Act.

I have mixed feelings about the Patriot Act, but since the ACLU is against it, I've decided that it's probably a good thing.

The law has been in effect for several months. I suggest you do a search for the actual law ( not some slanted synopsis) and decide for yourself. Also it seems to me that the request that the FBI made had very little, if anything, to do with the Patriots Act.

Edit--WW posted while I was typing mine and I in no way mean to suggest that her link is slanted

I will never willingly give up essential liberties such as privacy for fleeting security.

Thanks. I just saw a reference to it in the article and was wondering what it was. It seems to me like there are lots of laws that are passes w/o making the news. OTOH, some bus blows up in the middle east and it's on the front page.

The Act allows a larger number of judges to sign wire-tapping orders.
The law officers still need to convince a judge you need to be tapped.

Why is it that the more un-American and ignorant an individual is, the prouder they are about it? :disgust:

I've been looking through it, and although most of it seems to be acceptable, I don't like Section 802, a5Bii:

<< `(ii) to influence the policy of a government by...coercion; or >>

The way I interpret that, anyone who organizes or participates in a protest, or even sends a letter to a public office, is a terrorist. :Q

I will edit if I find anything else I don't like...

WHAT?!?!?!?

I get tired of hearing everyone freak out about their "privacy" everytime something like this comes to light. What privacy? If the government can start listening in a little more, than maybe they can catch these F*CKING A@@ terrorist pieces of SH*T before they kill others. That is the possition that I take. Those MFers come over to our country to kill us and go un noticed because of all the freedom they have. If someone wants to tap my phone line or check my e-mail go ahead! This does not make me un-American and ignorant, it makes me fed up!
