Patient dumping

I know this has been going on for many years as hospitals clear beds of indigent patients but this practice is just too much. I just ran across this story in Baltimore where the security staff wheeled this lady out in freezing temperatures and dumped her at the bus stop in nothing but a hospital gown. Fortunately a passerby caught it on video and called for help. What do you guys think should be done about this practice?

Wheel her to the nearest Republican's house and force them to take care of her.

I didn't know that people actually had the name Baraka, thought that was just a Mortal Kombat character.

It could never be right to put a person out in a hospital gown, but a hospital is not a shelter. It's a homeless problem.

It is a homeless problem. And our homeless problem is not a result of capitalism any more than homelessness in socialist countries is to blame on socialism. We are really a mix of capitalism and socialism in this country, we have social programs to help the homeless. I'm not saying it is enough, but we do have socially funded programs to that end. My point is this and only this, blaming capitalism for this situation is rather short sighted and surely a politically driven comment more than a substance driven comment.

I agree its not a capitalist problem. Its a not enough room at the shelter problem, which goes to local government.

They are just helping her overcome hospital dependency and increase community engagement.

There is much fault which can be found in it, however, there is no guarantee in any system where choices will be made based on a scarcity of resources.

Decisions ought to be made on merit, not isms, and that is not in the nature of the society as it exists. "X will fix Y" as a first principle is foolish.

Much reform is needed, far beyond what caused this poor woman's circumstances.

Please. Homelessness is a national problem. It's concentrated in urban areas because they migrate to places where at least some help is available.

Beyond that, putting patients out on the street w/o at least proper clothing is completely inexcusable.

Capitalism? Capitalism doesn't care about people in general. Capitalism cares about profit for a few people. The rest can fuck off & die for all they care.

There is no scarcity of resources in this country when it comes to food, shelter & clothing. Capitalism has created the artificial scarcity that exists.

At my hospital we have a transportation fund so anyone can get a taxi to where they are going at any time on our dime. We have a clothing bank that depends on donations. Unfortunately, sometimes there just is no place for a person to go after leaving the hospital but a shelter, which for many is worse than the street. We certainly don't dump anyone. We always feel we have a burden for a "safe" discharge, but that doesn't always constitute much. We don't have an ER, so patients are always insured, although sometimes they lose coverage or we find out their policy wasn't really active. If that's the case, we eat the cost and take care of them. It's an academic center, though, so the push for profit is somewhat different.

That should be chargeable as depraved indifference to human life. Is this that care everyone can get at emergency rooms at work that’s supposed to replace actual health care.

I don't care what the entire story is. Having security put an old woman outside in 30 degree weather dressed only in a hospital gown is wrong. Period. Full stop.

BTW: I 100% agree healthcare is completely screwed up
