Patient Abuse in Hospitals, witness 1st hand, Thread #2

First thread was closed due to jetblade crapping in it. So i was advised to restart a new thread if I wanted to.

long read, no cliffnotes.. dont be lazy!

Last night my husband and I went up to the hospital to visit his mother. She's in there for a broken hip. Anyways, while we are there the elderly nun diagonal from my mother in laws bed starts paging a nurse for help. She wants to be moved from the chair into bed. The nun had been left in the chair since 5pm and its now 8pm. So the nurse finally at 8pm (after numerous pages from the nun) decides to come in and tell the patient how it is. She literally verbally abused her right before our eyes. She didnt have any idea we were there. She starts screaming at the Sister about how if she wants to be moved she should ask her day nurse and stop wasting night nurses time. And that if she doesn't tell the day nurse to do it before her shift ends then she deserves to stay in the chair.

After about 15 minutes of her reaming out Sister. She turns around and sees my husband and I standing there staring at her and her episode. She then becomes instantly nice with Sister. We left soon after (thankfully our mother is mobile so she doesnt need much help from the nurses except the occassional meds).

Fast forward to about 30 minutes ago: My mother in law calls to tell me what happened after we left. That Sister paged the nurse all night telling her she had to make a bowel movement. The nurses in turn replied "no you dont, you can hold it." Also the woman beside my mother in laws bed also asks to be repositioned because she has been stuck in the same position for atleast 10 hours. The nurse tells her to wait until the dayshift nurse. This all happened around 5am.

I don't know exactly what is wrong with the woman nextdoor but, I know that with my backaches its very painful to remain in the same position for 10 minutes let alone 10 hours.

Eventually the dayshift nurses come on. They come to answer pages from the 2 patients and discovers the sister has crapped her bed because of the lack of help. and that patient #2 is crying because shes in so much pain from not being moved.

Im definitely contacting hospital administration. Im fuming mad, moreso at myself for not telling the b!tch off right then and there when i saw it happening.

Also see to it that the nurse in questions credibility is entirely ruined, make them unable to get another job ever. There is no excuse for what they are doing.

Id go and see the manager/person who runs the hotel and explain. What you witnessed is the gravest of things, and she could get into a mountain of trouble for it. No joking it really is that serious. If I thought any of my relations were going to be subject to that treatment, never mind witnessing it, I would raise a storm to say the least. Id write to the health authorities, the whole shebang. It's disgusting.

Yeah definitely, I think the main reason i didnt say anything last night when it happened was because i was fearful that maybe shed retaliate on my mother in law. There wasnt anyone of an official status that would have been able to do anything last night besides a supervising nurse so i didnt bother. But today.. They are going to hear an earful plus I'm already writing the letter.

I hope you can get something done about it. Are there any local television channels you could call and talk to about this?

Typically in an environment like that, the management is also corrupt and will just deny the accusations or pretend they'll do something about. I say you give your mother in law a video camera, take some film for a few days, and then take that to the police department or some kind of social services department.

I'll probably catch some flack over this but here goes...floor nurses are trainwrecks.

They end up there because they don't care about the job but want the nurses pay, think teacher that just passes the time without teaching, just waiting for retirement.

Nurses in the ER, ICU, PICU, and other more active areas are great, it's the floor nurses that I have a problem with. (don't get me started on retirement homes and convalescent hospitals)

man. this is seriously f-ed up. stupid as$ nurse - she deserves to be fired. wow. i cant believe this. if that was my mother i dont knwo what i would have done to that nurse. this kind of action is ridiculous.

report it. send letter to multiple people. do not stop yelling until something happens.

yeah! as yamaha said. keep yelling! and make frequent visits to the hospital.

heck call the news stations also. people need to know what is happening.

Don't know how it is "up there" but here we have a "house supervisor". This person oversees the whole hospital side of the operation. One is on-hand 24/7. A complaint such as this would be treated with the highest priority. Not only could the person be criminally prosecuted for abuse, the hospital itself would be wide open to civil proceedings. Of course it might be quite different with a state sponsored healthcare system.

We also have a "Patient Representatives" department. I had a problem with a nurse not returning phone calls even though my # is internal. All of 5 digits... One phone call to the patient reps, and suddenly things happened. They handle both hospital and clinic sides for us.

Thats just plain sickening...i hope when that nurse is old she gets a taste of her own medicine. Absolutely appalling. I never trust hospitals anyway. When my grandmother went in, I visited her everyday and stayed on top of the nurses, asking them on my grandma's condition, I even introduced myself to the head nurse of the floor to make sure. It became understood that I wouldn't tolerate any bullshit when it came to my grandmother in their care. Sorry you had to witness that 🙁

Contact administration? Don't be a pussy. Contact the local TV stations. Those reporters love big stories.

Thats a nice way to talk to a girl.

If the hospital administration doesn't take prompt action, contacting the local newspaper is not a bad idea. Newsghouls love a bit of scandal, but this would be in a good cause for a change.

I could be mistaken, but I believe the nurse could lose her license for that level of neglect. I'll ask my wife when I get home tonight. (She's almost a nurse, and my mother in law is a nurse... ) I also think that in both cases you mentioned, the patients can sue both the facility and the nurse... While generally, I hate frivolous lawsuits (ie spilling hot coffee on one's self and claiming you didn't know it was hot), but in cases where the lawsuits make an incident public, penalize the person who did something wrong, and serve as an example for others not to participate in such behavior, a lawsuit is warranted.

Hospitals and nursing homes can be terrible places.

My mom died from not getting enough water in the nursing home, and my friend's dad died about a year later after they dropped him and he busted his head open. 🙁

I hate doctors. :|

My Wife went to work at the hospital because she thought that is what she wanted to do. She does care about her her job and her patients. They are so seriously understaffed that she only gets a 30 minute lunch break out of a 12 hour shift, sometimes. Other nurses seem to wander off for an hour or so a few times during her shift. That leaves her very little time to talk to and take care of the patients, which is why she went into nursing, and to the hospital. After a year, she is going back to the nursing home, she used to work at, for more money and a better job and a job that she loves. This nursing home is one of the highest rated in the State of Oklahoma.

The night shift is the worst, they leave everything to be done for the day shift. it doesn't do any good to complain to admin, hell they can't find nurses to work as it is, and they pretty much turn a blind eye. My wife has told other nurses off on more than one occasion, tactfully though. She sees the hateful nurses and lazy ones too. She is so glad to be leaving.

Not all floor nurses are bad, but the good ones are overworked and underpaid. Same thing with nursing homes. One bad apple spoils the whole bunch!

Yeah the other night the night shift nurse was fighting with another nurse because she didnt want to help the nun out of bed to go to the bathroom.. they fought about it right in the room. Im actually leaving in a few minutes to go up to the hospital.
