He refused to allow NYC to place Lottery-sponsored gambling machines but he decided to raise income tax as well as sales tax.

Its so nice to have yet another unrealistic person running the state of NY...

Doesn't Pataki know that the best way to fix the state's budget problems is by cutting taxes?

The point is the lottery machines would have brought in enough revenue and he wouldn't have had to increase taxes...

You do realize that the lottery is essentially a tax on the poor?

Bah, it's a tax on those that choose to pay it.

The lottery is primarily for the benefit of education. It shouldn't be used to counter general budget difficulties.

This is how this voluntary is usually sold, but usually the funds generated by a lottery are dropped in the general fund, just like every other tax dollar.

By then they should be able to fix the situation. Everything in NYC is outrageous to begin with. Take gas for example, if I drive 10 minutes into NJ, gas is atleast 20 cents per gallon cheaper than NY.

No one is forcing anyone to play the lottery. However, they are forcing us to pay tax. Think about it. The difference between people affected is huge...

Why do profits go to the state general fund instead of directly to the schools?
Lottery revenues are deposited directly in a Lottery Aid to Education Account from which checks are written directly to school districts in the fall of each year.

you were saying?

And right now, most states having problems with their budgets. Most are looking for new revenue streams and not cutting spending.

How about 100% legal, state-controlled prostitution? Condems are free!

No, the lottery is a tax on stupidity. Darwin in action. The stupid people will spend money on lottery tickets, instead of the necessities of life such as food, prescription drugs, etc, and will therefore be more likely to die sooner, thus improving the quality of remaining genetic material in the world.

It's a win-win situations for the states and humankind as a whole.

I always say legalizing prostitution would balance the budgets of the States, and legalizing every illegal drug would provide enough tax revunue to fully fund every public school, hospital, urban renewal project, and civil service in every State in the US.

Of course, I'm a crazy visionary like that.

I agree with you in some part. The lottery is a tax on stupidity. However, it is also a form of tax on the poor. The two things are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they often go hand in hand.

Besides, whether or not a person spends their hard-eaned cash on the lottery has nothing to do with Darwin. I suspect you would find a direct relationship between the number of children a family has and the amount they spend on the lottery.

What ever happened to compassion for your fellow human beings? Don't you think it is in everyones best interest to see that fellow citizens lead a productive and fruitful life?

Its true, the government spends billions of dollars on the fight against drugs. Corporations rule America, if some company sold Marijuana in packs like they do Cigarettes, they'd most likely be legal.

The problem is politicians only care about getting relected and short-term solutions. If they ran the government like a business with performance incentives and long-term goals, we wouldn't be in the situation we are today. I say all we need is one good president that doesn't care about getting relected and does whats right, not what people want...

If there was no crime, and everything was perfect, what would be the campaign platform for politicians? Food for thought. ;-)
