PATA>SATA adaptor question

Hi

I got a SATA adaptor I was thinking of using to clear up some of the clutter in my case. All topics and searches I've found refer to someone using the SATA on a fresh install of Windows. I'd really rather not do that, so is it possible to just hook the adaptor/HDD up to the sata port and have Windows boot up from there? Or will it go apesh!t?

Thx in advance:)

Im not totally sure what your question is. Are you saying you want to get a SATA adapter and use your normal IDE drive through there and have windows boot up through that? Or are you saying you want to just insert a SATA drive and load windows from that (assuming it already has windows or it is going to be ghosted on).

My answer is it would probably work. I don't have a huge ammount of experience with SATA from what I have done with it you are able to choose which IDE it is considered to be. Such as the primary or secondary, in that case if you were to switch to a SATA interface and set it as the primary master as your main drive is now then it should work fine as long as there are no other problems with the SATA controller on your MOBO.

Sorry, let me clarify.
I have a 120gig WD PATA with Windows already installed on it. I have a PATA>SATA adaptor that I'd like to use. Can I simply install the adaptor on the HDD and hook it up to the serial port and have my existing installation of Windows boot from the serial connection?

Like I said, everything I read about using it involved someone doing a fresh install of Windows so I just wanted to be sure before I did it. Not sure if Windows had a problem switching from PATA to SATA.

Thanks:)

It is possible that it will have a problem. But if you have an adapter I say try it out, not like anything is going to blow up. And if they do HDDs have a three year warrenty. Put it on, make any necessary BIOS changes and try to boot, if you get an error just put everything back the way it was.

And not to sound newbish but I have never heard of PATA. Did I miss something in the tech world?

cool. honestly, I've had nothing but problems using pata to sata adapters. I have 3 of them, and can't get a single one to work. Though, that also may be due to my IS7. :)

Well to clarify more, this was on a NF7-S 2.0. :) Haven't really noticed any difference in speed( didn't think I would) but having that bulky fat IDE cable out the way is nice. Only problem I ran into was having to lower my HDD, because the adaptor couldn't fit due to my video card being so close.
