RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson says marijuana should be legalized and treated like alcohol because the government's war on drugs has failed.
The outspoken evangelical Christian and host of "The 700 Club" on the Virginia Beach-based Christian Broadcasting Network he founded said the war on drugs is costing taxpayers billions of dollars. He said people should not be sent to prison for marijuana possession.

That line of reasoning suggests that we should legalize meth, cocaine, and whatever the fuck else that is imported illegally, not just weed...

Not really. Not all drugs are created (or manufactured) equally. You have to look at each one individually.

I'm listening. Let's see if he can turn down some of the other crazy and then I'll consider.

Yup. I used to be of the opinion, pretty much, of "legalize all drugs". Not so anymore, but weed being illegal is just fucking stupid.

I thought drugs were different until I actually saw people use "hard" drugs. Amphetamine (Adderall/Dexedrine) doesn't deserve the reputation it has. It doesn't turn people into vampires or serial killers. They just stay up playing WoW for 20 hours straight instead of 15. Cocaine was even less dramatic; it was no different than watching someone drink coffee. They're a bit more energetic for a while but nothing really changes.

Don't blame the drugs. Blame the people. 9/10 people can drink alcohol until they pass out and it's not a problem, but there's always that 1 guy who wants to fight people and yell at cops and smash things.

Easily the smartest thing this guy has yet said in all his years of saying stupid shit. Too bad he doesn't have the kind of influence anymore that might get those in power to listen. I know a few potheads who definitely lack anything like ambition, but they are not dangerous (except, perhaps, to themselves).

You can't really legalize the hard drugs, but they should really be decriminalized. Get people the help they need - don't just throw them in prison. That doesn't help anybody.

If you look at all the countries that have gone this route, their drug abuse rates are significantly lower than in the US. Like half.

I guess that's true for most people while on the drug, however "hard" drugs have extremely nasty side-effects from their use.

Addiction and what people will do to get their next fix. People will sell their children for their next hit of crack, coke, meth.
Severely deteriorated heath/malnutrition, rotting teeth, hair loss, etc.

legalize/decriminalize, tax, and help people get the help that they need instead of throwing them in jail.

It's time for politicians every where to realize the war on drugs has failed. All we do is creating a very lucrative market for people making and selling illegal drugs all over the world.

I've watched my peers fuck up their lives with meth and heroin, so I disagree that all drugs are basically alike. I've seen people get fired, get kicked out of their house, spend months living in homeless shelters or on the street, lose 80 pounds, get arrested 5 times in less than a year and botch a suicide attempt. Pot doesn't do that to you. I'm not disagreeing on the idea of legalizing all drugs, but they really, really aren't the same.

nasty side effects.. like alcohol? Many of the bad side effects are a result of dirty, unregulated drug production, not necessarily the drug itself. Push caffiene underground and see what happens.
