Pasta Machine, are they worth it? Should just stick with the pre-made ones?

I was looking at a used MARCATO ATLAS PASTA MOD 150 for about $20.

I eat a lot of pasta and has anyone noticed a difference between fresh pasta and the dried stuff?

What should I look for in pasta machines?
and recommended recipes?

What about recommendations for pastas? Should I get away from the great value stuff?

Thanks,

I love fresh pasta, there is definitely a difference, but I am too lazy so far to attempt to make my own.

you know you can just roll out pasta dough and then slice it with a knife, right?

That's what my girlfriend said... :D
I think I'll do that, but I do like thin pasta!

That'll give you an idea of the flavor difference. You can then see if buying a machine's worth it. I don't think I've ever had fresh pasta.

I bought pasta plates for the mixer. The first couple batches were nasty. After that, they were every bit as good as the pre-made, dried stuff but no better. Then we switched to Atkins.

Might as well buy it for only $20, they use to cost $100 when they first came out, my dad bought one then...

its a novelty, like making your own bread. first couple times...then its in the closet.
you might as well wash your laundry by hand, its just too much work.

if you marry martha stewart then fine, but i'm sure even she uses some flunky to do those menial tasks.

Negative. We use ours and make our own bread frequently. It just tastes better - the bread and the pasta.

Making pasta is quick and easy and the flavor can't be beat.
