Password reset on win 8

So I bought a new ultrabook yesterday, set it up, everything went smooth. Unfortunately I think I may have misentered my password:hmm: and now its not letting me log in. I tried creating a windows password reset usb from my windows 7 computer but I keep getting an error message when I try to use it on the windows 8 computer. It gets me all the way to the point where I can enter a new password but it won't let me go through with it. What are my options? I was thinking worst case scenario I return it:\

Try burning something like the Ultimate Boot CD (available from here: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/), which includes a tool in HDD/Data Recovery/ that can let you reset or blank out forgotten passwords. You can also do this with other tools (for example, with the System Rescue CD - available here: http://www.sysresccd.org/SystemRescueCd_Homepage - but that one is a little more involved, but you can look up how to use it online).

You can also use Kon-Boot: http://www.piotrbania.com/all/kon-boot/index2.html, but that might not work for Windows 8.

If you have another administrative account on the system, you can just reset it from computer management / users and groups, but it sounds like you don't.

It should be obvious, but the ease of use and availability of tools like these is why people should use a BIOS password that prevent you from booting from a CD or USB until you enter a master password.

Its an ultrabook so it doesn't have a cd drive, I'd have to do it via usb. I seen a lot of "password removal" type programs online but I wasn't sure if they were spam or not. Are there any programs that I can use via usb? I'm not sure why the windows password reset isn't working, but I'm thinking because its from windows 7

All of these will still work on USB, just use something like isotousb ( http://www.isotousb.com/ ) and then boot from the USB device just like you would normally boot from a CD. 🙂

That said, I can vouch for both the Ultimate Boot CD and System Rescue CD (they both work for resetting the administrator password - though the Ultimate Boot program is much simpler to use, so I'd recommend that, and I've not tried them on Windows 8 yet).
