I changed the password on my computer the other day (XPP w/SP2 and all updates), and ever since it has gotten the bad habit of sometimes accepting the password and sometimes rejectng it.

Anybody have any thoughts on what to do about this annoyance???

Uhh...stop smoking the crack? :)

Seriously, the password for your account is only stored in one location and encrypted, I don't see how it could sometimes accept it and sometimes not. Mistakes in typing it are the only cause I can think of for something like this. I assume you're only talking about the login prompt.

New keyboard? Seriously - either you are typing it incorrectly (Caps Lock, typos, etc) or your keyboard is malfunctioning.

Tried different people typing in the password, as well as three different keyboard. No joy. . . still logged on sometimes but not always (about 50-50).

While it was not accepting the password, I booted from my UBCD and changed the Administrator and the User to a [null] password and that let me in. Next I unselected the option to use the Welcome screen . . . relogged 10 consective times (about half were full reboots), and now is all golden.

The only thing I can think of is something in the Welcome screen or the SAM file was corrupted.

<BTW>, us old Swampsters can't smoke crack . . . it messes with our heart meds <VBG>.
