I have an old Windows 7 laptop that was upgraded to Windows 10 recently. I set a password for it the other day and unfortunately forgot it as I don't use it quite often. This sounds stupid but it is true.

So I did some homework online and tested two well-known programs: Ophcrack and NT Password. All failed.

What would be a good one in 2017?

How did you make the account? If it is a microsoft account, then you can reset the password.

Did you create a second account with admin rights? That's always a good idea but I'm guessing it's too late now.

Well, it is possible, but, we have no idea if what you are saying is true or not, or if it is a stolen PC.
So, do :
  • Start your PC and select the Power icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the lock screen.
  • While holding down the Shift key, select Restart.
  • On the Boot options menu, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC > Remove everything.
This will wipe everything though, and leave you with a fresh Windows 10.

Hi Elixer, I totally understand your concern. If it was a stolen one, then I wouldn't ask in here. I will just reinstall the OS. That is simple and straight forward. I have some important staff on the computer so resetting or recovering the password is a better option for me.

Put the drive in an enclosure or hook it to another PC and pull your data from the drive. Then re-install the OS.

I think that's the best solution provided the drive was not encrypted.

You will need another system which has the same operating system as you have. Ex: If you have Windows 7 Home Premium on your system then you would need another system with the same OS.
  1. Now create a password reset disk in B as described here.
  2. After you create a reset disk take your removable disk and insert it in A.
  3. Boot into Windows and in the login screen click 'Reset Password.'
  4. You will get a Password Reset Wizard to reset your password using the reset disk.

You would not need to recover your password had you stuck with windows 95....
