password recovery for OSX

long story short: bought a used mac, works fine but there is a password and the previous owner is out of the country until end of month, any way I can get into the computer? thanx

Press the power button, hold Command S. This should boot you into single user mode. Type passwd to change your password (may have to specify a user, can't remember).

nOcmonkey is right. Use the oldschool unix method to reset the password.

Or you can find someone with Mac OS X install CDs (10.4 is the current main version, all 10.4.x can be updated to 10.4.6 via the Software Update utility... but 10.3.x works great too). Once you boot off the CD you can launch a password reset utility. Or you might want to do a fresh install of the OS anyway.

You can also boot into single user mode and rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone Reboot and you should be able to run through the initial setup again, creating another administrative user.
