Hello,
My wife has a old dell laptop and is using it on the road for work and such, she has windows 98 on the system and the screensaver / password type thing is useless because all you have to do to bypass that is restart the machine...

So is there a piece of software or something within windows 98 that will allow her to have a TRUE password protection type security to keep prying eyes out of her computer?

She has multiple application files that she would like to lock down so it would be best if we could find something that allowed her to TOTALLY lock out the system to anyone who doesn't enter or know the password.

Does something like this exist even?

Thanks for any help on this,

Bill

Set the bios password, first of all, so no one can even get past the post screen without having that.

Secondly, I believe your best option would be to encrypt folders that need to stay secret vs. trying to password-protect Win98 as a whole. That's virtually impossible. File/folder encryption is a better choice.

Here's a question with good answers from the "Experts Exchange" website. You'll have to scroll through ads on the page to see the question, then scroll some more through ads to see some good answers about programs that can encrypt files and folders for Windows 98:
