I setup a small home network ,the problem I am having is that I can't connect to my Win XP Pro computer. It says (You must supply a password to make this connection ). I dont remenber setting up a password for this network. Is there a defaut password ? The Win 98 & Win 95 computer work fine on the network. Has anyone seen this problem?

thanks in advance

Make a user account on your XP machine, then give that user permission to access the files you are trying to share.

Or, you could login on your Windows 95/98 machine with the uername you are using on your XP machine. When it asks for a password type the password of the XP user.

I think that this will help, but if not expain exactly what you are trying to share and how your shared it. Also, include XP Pro or Home and if you are using XP pro whether you also connect to a domain (or is this JUST the LAN with three computers).

I am running Win XP Pro and TCP/ IP to communicate, I tried adding a new user on my XP computer w/ password . Then I logged onto network on my WIN 98 PC then I enter my (XP user name and password) , still same problem . It says incorrect password / cant connect to USER (XP computer) . Is there somrthing I am missing or wrong protocol?

Make a new user on your XP machine using the same login and password as you use to login on your 98 box.

To make the connection as easy as possible, all you need to do is enable the built-in Guest account that comes by default with Windows. This will allow you to browse the computer over the network without any passwords if you like.

On your desktop, right click 'My Computer' and go to 'Manage'.

From the management window, look under 'System Tools' to find 'Local Users and Groups', and inside the Users folder you should see the 'Guest' account with a little red X by its name. Right click the Guest account, go to Properties, and uncheck 'Account is disabled' ... now you should be set!

Thanks for the advice, but that does not work over the network at all! I have tried this several times as well, and who are you supposed to give access permissions? The guest? Nope, unfortunatley that does not work...

If you enable the Guest account, you can pick a folder that you want to share, right click and select 'sharing' ... share the folder and leave the default permissions which should allow Everyone in.

No I had the same problem and got the fix from a search either here or the OS forum, had to go into the sharing tab of the drive properties and I think it was that you had to turn off or on simple file sharing, if that doesn't make any sense just search for it, it was a rather simple fix once you find it out.

EDIT: I just checked on my machine, open up my computer on the xp box, go to tools, then folder options. From there go to the view tab and uncheck "use simple file sharing(recommended)" and that should do it.

Yes, but it will not work without the need to type in a password. No matter what who I give the permissions to (users, everyone, guest, anonymous), the other XP computer will still ask for a password and a username and the access is still denied.
Do you know when you turn on simple sharing, any computer with any user name can access my computer. I would like to be able to do the same thing, except only with certain folders.

what i've done with file sharing betwn xp and another windows os is on the xp machine....

doublio click the network neighborhood icon on desktop
on the left pane/frame/whatever you should see a "setup this computer for small office or home network"
follow the wizard. this will setup your machine so that anyone on your lan can connect to your shared folders without a password.

hope that helps.
