Passport question....

Scarpozzi

Lifer
I got married last September. My wife changed her name. Could she get away with using her passport if it has her maiden name? I'm just wondering what the odds of running into trouble would be. We want to take a trip and probably won't have time for them to reissue her one. (we'll probably still file anyhow)

Any advice or information would be helpful. We'd be travelling 6 weeks from now.

Check the passport site I am sure this ahs been asked and covered in the FAQ section.

I am sure it could cause problems but bring along a copy of the marriage cert. and that may help if you don;t have time to get the passport updated.

Good question. I would think the passport had better match the name on the ticket. Other than that, I can't see where there would be a problem.

I know it's not a good idea. She's about to go to a medical school program so we won't get another vacation together until Christmas probably so we want to head somewhere tropical.

You love your wife ? Then make sure that the names match correctly as on the ticket and the passport...another alternative would be to take your marriage certificate along.

You dont love your wife and want to get rid of her....well, you already have the answer for that...take her on the current passport, different names on ticket and forget to take your marriage certificate along and make sure battery of your cell phone runs out at the airport/immigration department 😛

That's my thought, but the problem would be encountered possibly during re-entry to the states. When you go through customs, they look at your passport, etc... I'm sure they log your SSN and it wouldn't match her name since it's been changed.

That's my concern.

Hmm. The UK passport site indicates that some countries won't accept the passport with a marriage certificate. You'll have to check with each country you will enter, including the US.

I found the form she would need to fill out. At least they don't charge for the service. =) They only charge $60 for expidited service. I might consider doing this, but it states that 6 weeks is the expected time. I might just hold out on booking everything until then and gamble. It only took them 3 weeks last time I got my passport.
