My family and i live in a small town, about 2 hrs away from big cities. We want to get passports and one of our friends told us that we can apply (fill out forms, maybe) from the post office. Is it true? TIA???

Yes, you have to fill out the forms, sign them in front of the clerk with valid ID's (I think you may need a birth certificate or naturalization papers), have the correct format pictures to go with them, etc. I think it takes 2 to 4 weeks to get them back. You can get all the forms and instructions on line at the Passport Office website. A tip - the passports are good for 10 years now. If you expect to do any reasonable amount of traveling, especially to places that require visas, get supplemental pages added when it is first issued. (There is a form for this too.) This saves having to send it back in after a few years to get more pages. I just realized mine is almost full after less than 4 years and I've got to get the added pages put in quickly.

KenGr is right-on about everything. Just got mine from the post office a few weeks ago, actually. Two things worth noting: Make sure they send your real birth certificate, not a copy. The morons sent a copy of mine and my passport is only good for a year. After my trip, I have to send it back with the certificate to get a real one that's good for ten years. Other thing is, if you pay for express mail both ways and pay for expedited processing, you can get your passport in no more than a week. It will cost you a sh!tload, though.
