I'm applying for my first passport. Need to submit before Nov. 1 because the photo I just took includes my glasses.

So, I got the application from my local post office and am about to fill it out. It says I need to submit original ID and a photocopy of it (front/back) as well.

1. I don't have a color printer, but just printed out a B&W copy of my CA driver's license. Will they accept that as a photocopy of my ID? I plan to submit the application at the post office. If they want a color photocopy, I suppose they can produce that right there using my driver's license.

2. At the top it has 5 check boxes:

[...] U.S. Passport Book [...] U.S. Passport Card [...] Both
[...] 28 Page Book (Standard) [...] 52 Page Book (Non-Standard)

Which of those do I want? I certainly plan to fly overseas at some point.

If you're going to be flying, you want the Passport Book. Get the 28-Page standard, unless you have a specific reason to get 52-Page.

Most (but not all) offices can make a color copy of your photo ID when they accept your application.

Oh - and the passport card can be handy to use as an everyday carry-it-on-you ID that doesn't include your home address. The only international travel it permits is the land crossing between the US and Canada.

So, if I check Both, I get the 28 page book, or I have to check Both and also the 28 page book? Seems confusing.

If you want both the book and the card, check both.

If you're getting a book (and have therefore checked either book or both), then select the number of pages you want (28 or 52).

Those checkbox options are on different lines separated by instructional text. It doesn't seem at all confusing to me, personally.

Select Both and also select 28 Pages.

I wish the 52-page option was there when I last got my passport. I ran out of them quickly. But, then again, I travel a lot and the last few countries that I've been to have used full page stickers instead of small stamps.

I had one crazy afternoon. I zipped (bicycle) over to my local USPS office, asked to submit my application for my first passport. The woman asked for the required items, looked at the photo and said it wouldn't be accepted. She said they have a new requirement that you can't wear glasses, "they want to see your eyes." I replied that my information was that this requirement kicks in Nov. 1, 2016. She said that wasn't so, they'd gotten a letter. She said as well that my head was too small in the 2"x2" photo (I got that done at Costco, where they have a system to produce passport photos). I contested that too.

I insisted that Nov. 1 was when the requirement took effect. In fact, I got the form only a few days before and the postal worker said I had until Oct. 31 to submit the application with photo before the new requirement would kick in. Anyway, the woman I talk to today refused to believe the rule wasn't already in effect. I asked her to talk to a supervisor, and she resisted that with some remark and said she'd have to consult the State Department. She said I could send in the application as is but they would send it back requiring a new photo. I took back my application, photos, my photocopy of my ID, everything and figured to bike over to Costco and ask them to take another photo of me, this time bigger and without my favorite glasses. However, I decided to go home first to shave (I hadn't in over 24 hours, figured I wanted to be clean shaven).

I go home, search and find that Nov. 1 is indeed when the new rule goes into effect:

1475842786033.jpg

This from the State Department's own site.

I then found my previous application (had used a blue ballpoint pen, and then discovered that they required black ink), and the section for stapling your color photo indicates the head vertical dimension must be between 1" and 1 3/8". I measured mine and it's more than 1 1/8", more by about 1/64". So, well within the specification. I print out the page from the State Department website clearly showing NOVEMBER 1st as you see above, and when I reach the front of the line I wave that in her face and claim that my photo is acceptable according to the specifications on the form. She denies this saying the photo is clearly too small (not the photo, but I appear too small in it to her, i.e. on a subjective basis), and she insists writing on the application that the photo is "too small." I'm getting pretty angry at this point and I'm arguing with her, I had brought a ruler to prove my point but she refused to even consider looking at the form and what it said much less using a ruler. She reiterated that she's been doing this for 32 years and knows when a photo is too small. She shows me a couple of applications that she'd taken in today and yes, their heads looked bigger than mine, however that doesn't mean my photo is not acceptable. She then says that she doesn't have to weigh a package to know its weight. I counter that the only way to know the weight of a package is to put it on a scale. She countered that this wasn't so, I turned on my heel and left declaring in a loud enough voice, "you're wrong!"

Yes, she got my application and will submit it, including her written declaration that the image of me in the photo is "too small." I had to write a check to the State Department for $140 (no credit card payment is acceptable for that, said the woman) and made a credit card payment for $25 to the USPS for processing the application on their end. She said I may get a letter from the State Department saying that the photo is not acceptable. I figure if that happens I won't get into it with the State Department but will return to Costco and ask them to take another photo. I'm in no hurry. I have no travel plans, currently, I left that part of the application blank (where do you plan to travel).

Anyone know the Bob Seger song "Katmandu?" I had that running through my head after going home, shaving, checking the internet and the application specifications. Spot on, that song, after what happened to me this afternoon. Cool song...

My favorite Coen brothers movie, hands down. I don't see the relevance, though. That guy (in the movie) basically never said a word. I defended myself in spades.

You'll either get a letter or you won't regarding the photo. The postal worker's opinion probably won't make a difference. Some passport adjudicators are really picky about photos, but most would rather just approve it than waste everyone's time sending you a letter.

If you they do send you a letter, they may e-mail it if you included an e-mail address on your application, so keep an eye out for that.

Yup, that's in there. Thanks...

Technically, I don't think there's a thing wrong with that photo. It's within their guidelines completely, and easily. However, I won't contest it if they declare they won't accept it, I'll just ask Costco to take another, without glasses, and make my head bigger.

If you're not traveling anytime soon, why get a passport? Kudos for being prepared though. A few years ago a co-worker won a trip to Europe and had to get an expedited passport ($$$) at the last minute.

After receiving your passport consider applying for Global Entry (which includes TSA PreCheck), the fee is $100 for 5 years. We fly a few times a year and it's well worth it but the lines are starting to get a little crowded. Some premium credit cards offer Global Entry/TSA PreCheck reimbursement making your cost free, well except for the credit card annual fee.

Actually a black and white picture will be rejected. No questions asked and they will keep your passport fee!

You piss off a postal worker and then really expect your application to be submitted? Good luck on that. Keep your receipts and you may get lucky and not have to pay again.

To save yourself the hassle of going to Costco, you can take a photo of yourself, blow it up to the proper size in GIMP (or Photoshop, or similar), and print yourself a photo for a few cents at any convenient store (Walgreens or similar). It will save you a lot of money and time if Costco is out of your way.

If you have a smartphone, they have free applications that have templates to take passport photos and then save them to a file that will print out perfectly on a 4x6 picture at CVS or wherever you want to print them. That's what I've used for mine and my wife's pictures for our passports and have never had problems. It will print out a grid of 6 pictures on the 4x6 photo.

I guess I'm lucky that I have a National Passport Agency near by that I can go to instead of having to deal with the post office.

I also don't see the point of having a passport without having plans of traveling out of the country any time soon. They do expire in 10 years so why waste any time that you have it if you aren't going to use it?

FYI, I highly recommending doing the application submission in person at one of your local municipalities that allow it. You can leave certain things unanswered until you are there in case of confusion or needing additional instruction. Wife and I did it and it went smoothly. We actually chose a city hall office that was small and no one else was around waiting. It's by appointment only, but that was just for the better. Got the passport books in three weeks, the cards in two.

And if you are going for air travel I would HIGHLY recommend that you buy into the Global Entry program.

Jesus christ you sound like the worst person ever. Why wouldn't you just go pay the ten dollars or whatever again to get a new photo so you wouldn't have to worry about any of that? Seriously, the time you spent just fighting with her and trying to prove her wrong could have so much better used.

I almost hope your shit gets rejected.

I was going to post this. Trying to get in before the deadline is retarded in this situation especially if it gets rejected. Take a new picture and be done with it. If your time isn't valuable, figure out how to do it for pennies by printing your own picture at Walgreens. If your time is valuable, pay $10 and be on your way. In either case, tempting fate with the current picture is stupid.

I renewed my passport two weeks ago. I went to the Post Office, paid to have my picture taken, submitted the application, and then I got my passport 7 business days later. It took approximately 30 minutes of my time and no one was hassled in any capacity. The only reason I went there instead of mailing everything is because I didn't want to bother taking my own picture and the Post Office is close to where I was going to be that day. Otherwise, mailing everything is really simple. I mailed the forms and pictures for my kids a few months ago.

Hey OP. I do travel out of the US a lot and did have to renew my passport several times. I did pay about $10 for CVS/Walgreen to take my pictures. So far, no rejection for my renewals.

Ain't that the truth. Just submitted the I-751 for my wife a few months ago.
I have no idea what this is about. What about a visa and how does it relate to the info concerning my application?

Don't understand the recommendations to take another photo. There's NOTHING technically wrong with the one I submitted. The problem was the stupid clerk. What she wrote on the application will likely be ignored by the State Department. If they want another photo I'll provide it. Meantime, I'm not wasting my time (or money) getting another one taken and reappearing somewhere to submit another application, why bother?

AFAIK, my post office is not equipped to take my photo. My local Staples doesn't do it. I could pay $12.99 to have Walgreens do it but figured doing it at Costco last week (I was going to be there anyway), for $4.99 was the way to go. They do it all the time, have a system, a dedicated chip. They take up to 3 shots, you choose, they give you 4 two by two inch prints, no digital copies. I did my shopping while they did the processing.
