I built a system last Christmas for my grandfather with a Thermaltake Golden Orb and it sounds like a diesel engine. My grandfather has complained. Can I use an AMD Duron 1GHz stock heatsink without the fan and some high-quality thermal goo for this application?

Check out the gc68 from svcompucycle, add a panaflo L1a 80mm fan or a NMB low noise 80mm fan. If it will clear the capacitors on your board, you'll have a nice low noise solution. The stock fan may run at 7v, haven't tried it.

Or an Evercool nd3 from Nexfan, you'll want to 7v the fan. They also carry the gc68 as the galaxy monster.

That Gorb probably was not that loud when it was new. The problem is that small fans are easily affected by dust, and tend to get noisier before they die. If you replace it with a new HSF the noise will go away. If you use a HSF with an 80mm fan, noise will be even less and the fan will last longer. No need to do anything extravagent. As Jhhnn said, check out the GC68 from SVCompucycle.com. With that, no need to purchase a Panaflo fan or make the stock fan run at 7v. I'll be willing to bet your grandfather will be very pleased with the results.

I run an SVC GC68 with a Panaflo L1A at 8v on a PIII 1.4-S--good cooling and very quiet.

Grab a GC68. Don't use the stock HSF provided by AMD. They are simply too shabby.

I'll second the Zalman coolers, you might even be able to run one of the larger ones (if it fits) without a fan. Any larger heatsink might do without a fan I think

The fan on the heatsink of my oc'ed Celeron333 @ 416 died but it works fine without it and it doesn't even have any kind of thermal transfer material (looong time since I build it, plan to add AS3 to it when I get some time).
