Passive cooling solution for a P3 733?

I'm slightly rebuilding an old PC into a media box, and I want to silence it to my best ability. Can anyone recommend a passive cooling solution for my FC-PGA P3 733, that'd be great 🙂

i'm pretty sure such thing do exist. or did i read it wrong. did he ask for the tooth fairy? or passiv cooling?
 
All that bitchiness is a bit off, but here's an answer anyhow.

Passive cooling that chip is basically impossile. You can (maybe) do it with a huge heatsink, but even then you will need VERY good airflow or (even better) a duct direct to a case fan (how passive is that?).

Best bet would be a thermalright SLK series.
 
I don't see how you could do it either... maybe if you underclocked it and lowered the voltage, that coupled with one of the best heatsinks out today.
 
Large OEMs usually had their P2/3 CPUs passively cooled using those huge ass heatsinks.

I know my P3 at work has one of those heatsinks, I believe it's a 600MHz. I don't know where you can get one though...
 
I'm not trying to be bitchy, but if you can buy passive heatsinks for 2GHz-ish P4s, I think there should be something around. Does the X-box use an active solution?
 
they make giant passivecoolers that can cool p4's..so a p3 shouldn't be that hard. with a decently venitlated case my guess is a slk900 might work.

For pure security reasosns I would put an 80mm noiseblocker S1. At only 11Dba, its the quietest 80mm fan out there to push 22cfm. Or get the variable version which can go down to 9dba to push 13cfm.
Once you do that, you can get rid of all your other case fans, and I would also put a noiseblocker on the powersupply.
You would barely be able to hear it with your ear next to the case (excluding HDD noise).

BTW that 600mhz p3 at work is probably a slot series. They have inmense heatsinks that are not passive because they have a duct facing right at them.
The solution Ijust gave you will be even quieter and cooler.

About the passivley cooled P3 slot CPUS, my P3 500 gateway computer came with one, but there is a plastic duct going from the outside of the case with a fan blowing right on the CPU. When I recased my gateway (the mobo died), I had to get a little 40mm fan and screw it into the heatsink. Maybe watercooling for quietness? You do still need a 120mm fan to cool the radiator (but they are VERY VERY quiet fans).
