Passive Cooling Question.....

Ok In my Mame Cabinet, I dont want there to be a lot of noise. Do you think the PSU will be ok without a fan?

I plan on taking it out of the aluminum casing and mounting it to the side of the cabinet......



This is about how big it is..... it will be mounted near the bottom....


Also whats a good 60 mm fan that is really quiet yet fairly cheap.

Most PSUs will die without a fan. A very quiet 80x80x25 fan may be enough to keep it alive though. You could try a Panaflo L1A or NMB from SVC.com. I dont think there are really any 60mm fans that are "quiet". You probably need an 80mm there too.

I'd throw in a couple low rpm 80mm fans. you won't hear them at all.

If you ran it open, I bet it'd be fine without a fan, assuming there's somewhere at the top of the cabinet for hot air to come out.

OTOH, line the cabinet with some foam or something, and you'll never hear 1 or 2 <20db fans... Why chance a PS dying and taking everything with it?

Check out: Silent PC Review and the forums at that site. You'll find lots of good info for quieting things down.

And to answer your question: most PSUs REALLY need the fan--all the power from your PC runs through it, and it gets quite hot. I have the Nexus PSU (recommended at SilentPCReview) and its VERY quiet.

Ok thanks for the help.

I just want to put alot into this, the cabinet is fairly big and I dont want to cover the whole thing with that foam stuff, and i dont want to start cutting holes for fans either...

120mm fan at 7 volt ought to work aajax has some quiet good ones
