passive cooling inquiry

i just want to cool a processor, which will be a mobile 2800+ athlon64. i planned on mounting a '77 bonneville heater core to the top of my pc-65 (externally). i'd have the tubing run through either the top of my case or through one of the 5.25" bays.

now the question is, will this heatercore be adequate to cool my processor passively? i will be overclocking.

if needbe, i'm willing to put a huge heatercore/radiator on the side of my case instead. actually, that was my plan at first, but i can't find one of massive size that wont be a complete pain to modify.

the reason i need to go the passive route is funding. i really can't afford 120mm fans at the moment, and i'm not sure i can pull off making a shroud decently enough that it wont look like complete crap sitting outside of my case.

Btw, tofu, if you're wondering why you're getting this response, there's just a couple of inconsistencies. First of all, you have a mobile athlon 64, a lian-li case, a water-cooling system, and you're an overclocker (suggesting you don't hold on to parts for too long), and yet you say you can't afford a couple of 120mm fans, and are willing to go to all this trouble simply to say what would be about 3% of the cost of the system you've got?

As for whether that heatercore could passively cool your system, I don't think you'll find anyone with that heatercore, and even then anyone who'd try and ruin a lovely succint water cooling system just to make it passively cooled. From your first sentance I would've just suggested you save yourself a whole lot of trouble and buy a zalman reserator, but if you're saying you can't afford a couple of 120mm fans, then perhaps you'd be better off just waiting until you can?

Seriously though, if he theoretically didn't get the fans cause he wanted a silent watercooler would the heatercore with good water flow be enough? or would you need a bigger radiator?

costs...if u cant afford a fan, dont bother with water, let alone with over clocking. a resorator wouldn't be enough for u. how in the world would a heatcore be.

what pump are you going to use to transfer th water through the system. If you are thinking stagnant water will transfer the heat to teh heater core then cool itself you are crazy. You will need the water to be actively moving at all times while running, adn the radiator will only do you any good if there is air moving through it. Especially one from a car, they are designed to disipate heat at high speeds, ther don't do much of anything below 10mph for a couple reasons. Bottom line a radiaor of any type will do no good at all unless air is moving through it.

if you can't afford a couple 120mm fans you mine as well sell you water setup and just get a SP97U and it will be half the price and still perform better than your setup without fans. (also remember for water cooling your still going to need tubing waterwetter and hoseclamps if your not factoring that in already

yes but he's proubly got over 100 into his water system see it and get a SP97

not fanless, basically no water cooling will work fanless, get some 120's with that like the aluminum ones from FrozenCpu.com and run them at 5 or 7 volts and tehy will be sooooo quiet it will amaize you and you will still get air moving through them that is really all you need is some air movement through the raidiators.

Lots of water cooling will work fanless. There are solutions sold to run fanless water cooling. You just have to have a radiator\resevoir capable of dispersing enough heat.

btw, if you put a big radiator flat on top of a case convection would get some airflow going.
