Passive cards and 28nm

The 7750 seems to be a popular 28nm chip for passively cooled graphics cards. EVGA seems to be bringing out a Titan card that Newegg includes in a search for passive cards (here).

At the 28nm node, is this all we can expect for a fanless card? A 7750? At 28nm, you might expect a cooler running chip, right?

I limited my search to PCIE 2.0 and above, GDDR5, and I got six hits. The As.s looks like it has an inexpensive low-performance cooler on it. Can't we get a better card for fanless?

Actually Powercolor has a fanless 7850 but it comes at a thermal and dollar price: http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/55413-powercolor-scs3-hd7850/

How much difference does it make? Recording studios are like 30DB. I dotn hear my fans with a good set of headphones or with any sound at all in the room.

You do realize that OP is the Lord of the Fans, right? Some people *really* value low decibels.

I was thinking of putting a 500 rpm Gentle Typhoon on a passive card. It will never be loud, but always assure some air gets to the heatsink.

That review of the Powercolor SCS3 HD7850 looks promising (thanks for the link, BTW). I note that it is 125mm tall, which would make the heatsink around 120mm tall, would be perfectly sized for a standard fan. But I note that the card consumes 188W on load, while the NVIDIA GTX 660, which outperforms it, uses 168W. So I ask, where are the NVIDIA passive graphics cards?

umm, that Titan you provided a link for isn't exactly passive. Folks around here like to call those type water cooled. ;)

Thanks. I thought it looked . . . interesting . . . for a Titan to be fanless. But it was late and I didn't have time to investigate.
