Passion Of The Christ questions.

First of all, I am not religious, and have never read the bible. However, watching this great movie makes me want to do so. I have a very limited knowledge of religion, period.

1. So that white faced guy was Satan. Is this Mel's own view of him, or is thier some historical/biblical evidence about his/her appearance?

2. Judas was his friend, or brother?

3. Why were those Roman priests so angry with him? Was it simply because his own teachings were against those Roman's beliefs? Did they really see him as being such a threat, or did they do this to all blasphemers?

4. Jesus seemed to know this was coming, so did he let it happen to fufill his prophecy? In other words, did he know what he was doing?

5. I am guessing the Roman's we catholic. What is the big difference between Catholocism and Christianity?

Sorry if the Q's sound so lame....

1) Mel's dramatic license
2) Disciple/friend/traitor
3) Because the Roman guards were just thugs. They didn't care about the Jews' religion. Oh wait...you meant the Jewish priests? They were threatened that some of their power was being siphoned away by people following Jesus' teachings. They were just power-hungry egomaniacs that abused religion to suit their purposes.
4) Perhaps so.
5) Romans were not Catholic. Remember, the Catholic church was born out of Christ's teaching. The Romans worshipped their own gods.

It was the view of Mel and you call Satan a guy but when you look closely it's
actually a woman.

2. Judas was his friend, or brother?

Judas was a disciple. Jesus did have a half brother named Judas or Jude but he
was active in the early church after Jesus's death and resurection.

3. Why were those Roman priests so angry with him? Was it simply because his own teachings were against those Roman's beliefs? Did they really see him as being such a threat, or did they do this to all blasphemers?

Those weren't Roman priests. Those were Jewish priests and they didn't like Jesus' teachings
because what he said made them look bad. They had taken true worship of God through the years
and added a lot of man made customs to it and Jesus taught that "their" man made customs and
attitudes were not of God.

4. Jesus seemed to know this was coming, so did he let it happen to fufill his prophecy? In other words, did he know what he was doing?

Jesus knew exactly why he came to earth and what would happen to him when he was here.
He did fullfill prophecy fully.

5. I am guessing the Roman's we catholic. What is the big difference between Catholocism and Christianity?

The Roman's weren't Catholic. They were pagans.

Some would say that Catholics and Christians are one and the same. I view them
as associated in the same family but the Catholic church has added a lot of non
scriptural things into their theology IMHO.

Sorry if the Q's sound so lame....

No question ever sounds lame if a person is really trying to learn.

1) Mel's view.
2) Judas was one of the 12 Disciples.
3) Jesus had no regard for religious heirarchy of the time and his teaching methods were unorthodox.
4) He knew exactly was His Father wanted of him, and although He died willingly, He was not without sorrow nor fear, hence His anguish in the garden before his arrest.
5) As was said, Catholics are Christians. The Christian religion is largely divided into two parts: Catholic and Protestant. The Protestant side (started by Martin Luther) is further divided into many parts: Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, non-denominational Christians, etc. The biggest differences, IMO, between them all is simply how they choose to worship. Frankly, religious denominations have only served to splinter and weaken His original message, hence why I am a non-denominational Christian.

My suggestion to you is to start by reading the New Testament, see what Mel used as his reference for the movie. Maybe after you have read the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), start reading the Old Testament and the New Testament. For example, one chapter of each Testament every day. I also suggest maybe finding a prayer or Bible study small group...I don't know how old you are, but if you are a college student, maybe find a non-denominational campus Christian fellowship and see what they have to offer.

I thought that it was a horrible movie...over hyped, over dramatic and boring. But thats just IMO.

I highly recommend that you read the books of the major religions - bible, koran, etc. Even if you're not religious, it gives you insight into what large numbers of people have been taught.

Christianity was never based solely upon the Bible.

Early Christians had no Bible, and relied upon the Church for teaching.

The undivided Church, (Catholic and Eastern Orthodox), decided which stories were to be part of Canon (Bible) around 300AD
One of the passages in the Bible clearly states that it, the Bible, does not contain all of Christ's teachings.

Martin Luther removed certain books of the Bible, like Revelations and Maccabees. Later Protestants, put Revelations back in, kept Macabees out, and removed some more books, like Tobit.

He also came up with the idea of Sola Scriptura, the Bible as only source of authority.

This was his own idea, and mainly done to take governmental, rather than theological authority away from the Church.

The movie follows the Stations of the Cross, in one of them, He falls while carrying the cross. This comes from Tradition accepted by the church, rather than any of the Gospel stories. I am neither Catholic nor Protestant, and I don?t know who is correct. But, while this may seem a technical point, it is accurate to say that Protestants have done away with some church teachings and certain books of the Bible, rather than to say that Catholics Added to the Bible and bible teaching.

Second canon books which are included in most Bibles from 400 AD to 1885AD, including the 1611 King James:

Additions to Daniel
Judith
Esdras
Additions to Esther
Susanna
2 Maccabees
4 Ezra
Prayer of Manassheh
Sirach
Wisdom of Solomon
Baruch (incl Epistle of Jeremiah)
1 Maccabees
Tobit
Bel

another vote for a good movie!

a 2nd reason why Mel Gibson personified Satan is that people tend to think of Satan as the guy with horns and a cape, but the devil is very real and familiar to everyone that we don't recognize him as the devil until it's too late.

The devil was a woman too if I recall

I refuse to see that movie.... I just don't see the point. All I would be able to see is how the jews are portrayed... I don't think anything else would even register with me. Besides from what I heard it was kinda a snuff film... watch some jewish guy get his asz wailed on for 2 hours. Watch him bleed and die... ummm errr... no thanks.

And sin is often seductive...hence the woman-like figure...

I think Mel was trying to make us think about about who or what Satan is
by not making him look like the sterotyptical "Satan".

Don't miss the obvious:
Mary is Eve's foil.
God grants Eve free will, and she allows for original sin to enter the world through her disobedience.
God can "make" anyone pregnant He chooses, but through Gabriel, He askes Mary if she will bear the Christ child. Mary has free will, but chooses obedience, thereby allowing for salvation to enter the world.

The "female" and baby are foils to Mary and Jesus. They are a literary device to highligh Mary's obedience, and Christ's sacrifice.

Am I out there or did anyone else see a bit of that female Borg from ST:TNG in that devil character?

Actually Jesus DID respect and encourage respect of religious hierarchy. However, the majority of the spiritual leaders of that time were slef righteous and self centered. Jesus was angry because the teachers were not leading/shepherding the people, rather taking advantage of them.

But everything else sounds good 😉

No...well...on that point you're not out there 😉

Mel seems to have forgotten the zombies rising from the floors during the earthquake too, I wonder why.

The movie is poor, and it seems it just wants to guilt people into seeing the light.

Not at all.....It just shows the suffering "Passion" of Jesus that day and the price
that was paid.

And Mel couldn't have shown everything that happened during that time unless we
were willing to sit in the movie theatre for a long tiime 🙂

What merrited crucifixion anyway? There were two others receiving the same fate...

Also...

Who was the guy who carried the cross for Jesus? Was he in the bible?

I had to watch it a second time to pick up where Peter denied Jesus three times. That was creepy.

The Romans were masters of crucifixion and usually it was reserved for the worst of the worst.
The 2 men on that hill that day were called "thieves" but the real term was "malefactors" which
meant they weren't on crosses because they stole just property.

Matthew 27:32
And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.

Peter had been told that he would deny Jesus 3 times and he said "there is no way" but yet when he was
accused of being a follower of Jesus he said he wasn't. It's a beautiful story of forgiveness because
later when Jesus was resurrected Peter became a leader and one of the strongest believers and advocates of Jesus
being the son of God and his sacrifice on the cross.

The Stations of the Cross could most accurately be called Catholic, as they became an Easter ritual in the Middle Ages (before the reformation, when Protestantism began, for those who didn't know). Though some Protestant faiths might still accept them.

I see. What about the grotesque looking fellow that the crowd picked to be released over Jesus? He was a serial killer. Why was he not taken care of the same way. Thievery was less tolerated then murder? Confused.

John 8 -- IMO, one of the best examples of why the Pharisees (or "Jewish priests") hated Jesus, and wanted him killed.
