I've never really done this, but at a friend's house over the weekend their mother was complaining about people who do this on the highway. Is it generally considered a bad thing to do ?

Edit - passing in the right lane

If you pass people using the lane to the right of them, instead of the left-most lane.

He means when you accelerate past someone on the right side to get ahead of them.

Now for your question: if you have the option then you should go left because it's safer. People can see out their left side easier than their right. However, people who complain about someone passing them on the right side is probably a stuck up slow driver who can't drive well. Everyone passes on the right all the time. It's a neccessity if you want to get anywhere.

Well when you have people that like to drive the speed limit on the left lane, sometimes passing on the right is the only option.

It depends if your race ahead of people waiting to pass some one going slow in the right hand lane then your being an asshole. If your just passing some asshole driving slow in the left lane then that is fine.

Oh ok, I thought it was a huge driving taboo, but if you need too I see it's no big deal.

Thanks guys. - Rob

Your friend's mother needs to learn how to drive if she's being passed on the right.

You shouldn't have to pass on the right, because slow drivers should be in the right most lane.

Nope. I will try to pass on the left but if the left lane (or left most lane) isn't open then the right lane is fair game.

Do it all the time. I'm a weaver if the highway is open enough in general. It's better than getting frustrated staying behind constant-speed drivers in the left lane hoping they would realize something...

that should be a law in this country. i normally always pass on the left, but slow ass drivers hugging the left lane and refuse to move when you high beam them...are maroons.

People who complain about drivers passing on the right are usually the assholes who drive slow in the left lane and need to be shot, stabbed and then beaten... wait, reverse that.

don't they call it the speed limit because it's the *speed limit*?

slower than speed limit = right lane, that's correct, but at the speed limit?

it's people who think like that (you can drive over the speed limit to pass) that cause accidents.

It is the law in most states, the right lane is the travel lane and left on for passing only. They can give you a ticket if you are in the left lane for a long time, it happened to a friend of mine up in Oregon, though that's the only time I've heard of it since cops want to go after more dangerous people like speeders instead.

Actually, both speeders and slow drivers are the cause. It's not speed that kills, it's the variation of speed between cars that creates hazards. So if everyone else is doing 75 in a 65, and you're doing 65, you're the unsafe one.

Ya gotta follow the flow-of-traffic. If others are doing 67 in the left lane and you're doing 55mph, others are jamming on the brakes and guess who'd be the one causing the accident ? Of course by law it's alright, but flow-of-traffic dictates who should be in the "fast" or "passing" lane and who should move over.

A person driving in the middle lane should be driving faster than traffic in the rightmost lane. If they are NOT they have no reason to complain and should get over.

maybe you're right, but my point is that it's the people who cause this 'flow of traffic' whose license should be suspended. the traffic isn't going to just 'flow' 20 over the speed limit if not because of some a-hole speeding in the front. and the victims are people who are just trying to follow the rules by not driving over the speed limit.

the speed limit is there for a reason. i wish i have time right now to explain more about this, but i gotta go right now. i studied geometric design of highway (heck i got an MS degree doing transportation design and modeling), and the speed limit on the highway is there mainly for safety reasons. i'll try to explain better next time.

it's not speed that kills...it's drivers' stupidity. those that eat burgers, talk constantly on the cell, reaching around to slap their kids, shave, reading...while driving.

Sorry but 55mph on the Long Island Expressway is just ludicrous. I don't know anyone that does 55mph even in the center lane. Those limits need to be re-thunk.

Speed can kill. But keeping a constant flow of 80-85 on a 60-65 mph speed limit highway will not cause many accidents if you're driving safe and being attentitve. Yes, I know the faster you go then your car will go farther when you stop. But when you compare accidents of constant flow traffic 80-85 mph vs. people on cell phones, people eating, people who dont pay attention when they drive, drunk drivers, etc etc .. you'll see the latter category is many many times higher, regardless of speed.
