Passenger stops takeoff of United Airlines jet taxiing with massive fuel leak

Just how in the hell can you not see fuel gushing out of the port wing before takeoff? A passenger caught it and recorded the incident on her cellphone. This doesn't speak well of the inspection process or anything else over at UA and anybody who signed off on a preflight inspection should be fired. This is just beyond appalling.

That's some pretty shitty inspection they have there. That's not a small leak that could have been missed, that's a damned waterfall of jet fuel. Good thing there wasn't a spark or anything, that would have been ugly.

Looks like a 767, there is a surge tank at the wing tip with a NACA vent which is most likely where the fuel if coming from.
The vent allows air to escape as fuelling is taking place and also provides positive pressure to the tank during flight.

In this instance I suspect the aircraft is still being fuelled judging by the rate that the fuel is flowing out and that either a fuel quantity sensor is unserviceable or the fueling valve was opened manually.

Still, more bad publicity for United.

You do know that airplanes don't have rear view mirrors and side mirrors right? That's why a pilot couldn't see it leaking.

I'd be shocked if they weren't aware of what was happening though. Just because a passenger noticed this "first" doesn't mean the crew didn't know something was happening. The article doesn't even mention anything about what the crew did/didn't know.

Earlier this week, a United Airlines flight scheduled to depart from Newark Liberty International Airport was canceled. Why? Because a passenger looked out her window and saw jet fuel gushing out of the wing.

And the point is we don't know if they pilots already knew about the problem. All we currently know is a journalist said a woman saw it first, which is a completely worthless claim at this point.
