Wife took 2007 Honda Odyssey which was running and driving perfectly before in for emission test and it passed no problem.

Next day, I take the car for a drive and the emission light is on on the dashboard and there's a pretty loud ticking noise coming from the engine.

I am not happy. Either a horrible coincidence or they jacked something up. Though I have no idea what they could have done.

Probably a coincidence. These days, afaik an emissions "test" is usually just plugging in a scan tool and checking for emissions codes.

Yep, even in Commiefornia they now do a computer only test (and visual inspection) for most OBDII cars.

I once had my battery die and need a jump at the emissions test place.
Battery had been working fine for the last 5 or 6 years before that .... just coincidence ... battery need to be replaced because it was old, just happened to die when I was at the Emissions place ... but would have happened anywhere.

I'd be happy that you passed the test before the light came on. Otherwise if you failed, most places will charge you again for a retest after 15 days.... and you'll have at least in CA 3 months to get it fixed after registration expiration or you can will be 'unplanned usage' Seriously... Damn... choose the lesser of two evils...

What is an "emission light"?

Do you mean "Check Engine Lamp".

It may or may not be an emissions problem. It only means that the OBD2 system has detected an issue that requires attention. You need to connect a scanner to read the OBD Code to determine the problem area.

It could be as simple as a loose gas cap.

As I was reading your post it hit me, "dude should check the gas cap." Then I got to the end. I bet OP filled up and didn't put it on correctly, either right before or after the inspection.
