Wish there was a Pascal card with the improved cooler, and everything else left as is. I enjoy the efficiency of the ref cards. Too much to ask?

Prolly, modding the ref is the only way...

Okay.

MSI cards always go way above on power consumption compared to reference cards, no idea why since other aftermarket cards can keep power in check.

It is not just MSI. ASUS is also less power efficient in all states, albeit, not as much.

Pay attention to the idle state, with the fans completely off, you would imagine the thing to consume less power than with the refs always-on fan. I know, its not a huge difference but still. This "pre-overclocking" must go imo. All I want is a decent HSF system, minus the excessive horse power they seem to offer out of the box.

You could try taking a look at EVGA's basic model, but reviews on aftermarket Pascal cards are few and far between.
